Local powder coat (£60) plus decals and splatter paints would be £90. All the parts amassed to date aren't much more than that so I'll leave it be. It's not like the bits I've bought are catalogue spec!

Some parts.... Thumb shifters from Scant. Still looking for a DX front mech, the one from eBay just turned up and was 31.8mm. Refund time....

The chainset came from the tip and has been on my ride to work bike for ages! I got a old 300LX to put on the commuter and buffed these up for the Kona. Headset is an alloy one, not period correct but hey. I initially ordered a chromed one (new) but when it arrived the crown race was corroded :shock: yet another eBay refund - no quibble though.

Ok, the garage got cleared, ishaw supplied the pedals & sharkfin (Karma! ) and we have enough bits to build! Note it is built not finished :roll: Still waiting on a decent DX front mech and I think some DX cantis too. I also need to improve my photographic skills.

Either you've done a very good restoration of the rusty bits or your photo's have been taken from strategic angles to hide it but that looks great. From those pics I don't know why you would even consider a repaint.

Hmm, not so much restoration as a cack-handed photographer with shots taken at a distance! I bought a little pot of Humbrol gloss white enamel paint and rubbed back the really bad bits to bare metal and gave it a couple of coats with a brush. I had placed it next to a radiator for a few hours to get nice and warm then painted it and stuck it back there for another 12 hours and then repeated. It was in the living room on a workshop stand which went down well with the family

It looks bloody massive next to an 18" frame. Bizarrely it is just over 19" centre-top at about 19 3/8". The modern XLC headset is nice although the cups are very thin and need a lot of care to fit:

I rode this 78 miles offroad on Friday! From Newlands Corner on the North Downs, via the Downs Link to Shoreham for lunch and back again So much fun and bloody comfortable too. I had to fit a modern saddle as the Kona one is an instrument of torture and some SPDs but other than that retro all the way
