Klein MC1 with Accutrax fork...

SleezUs

Retro Newbie
Ok, so a couple of years ago I bought an old Rascal. Came with a Accu-fork and a controltech stem. I finally got hold of a MC1, but when I tried to fit it, it stops down i the tube. No problem with tighten it, but would like to have it a centimeter lower.

So I check the tube and I see tha the wall is thickens after a couple of centimeters. A sharp edge.... So that is blocking my quill from going farther. Are they really built like this? Am I doing somthing silly wrong?

New here, not sure where to post, hope it got right!

Re:

Cut a cm off the quill, easiest solution! Just make sure you cut it at the same angle. You might also need to ensure the quill bolt is threaded enough to do that also.

I have had similar problems in the past, especially as most of my frames are small or very small so the steerer tube is equally tiny.

Re:

Yeah... Kinda came to the same conclusion, though I had hoped I didnt have to. Guess changing the fork wouldnt do much good either, since you've had this problem before. Not that it seems very realistic to get an original fork for this one anyway. (If anyone got one.... and so on!)

Another thing; The Rascal came with a unicrown fork, is this the only Klein fork that will fit? Not interested in shocks off course, but I am after straight forks, so I wonder if the "box crown" or "uniklein" would fit the Rascal? Its a midium frame... Just gotta love the aggressive cornering and the feel of the ground surface when riding with straight forks...

Guess I am going for the hacksaw on this one then. The bike is meant to be ridden!

Thanks!

Re:

The rascal uses standard 1" so things like the box fork won't fit as they use a very bizarre 1.5" size that is specific to the Attitude and Adroit.

Some forks don't have the butting at the bottom but it really is a hit and miss. Personally I love the accutrac fork, one of the nicest forks out there so I would be tempted to amend the MC1 to fit. As I mentioned though, before you cut it make sure the quill bolt is threaded enough to allow the wedge to be tightened up a cm higher up

Obviously what I am suggesting might not meet with approval from Klien aficionados though but it sounds like your bike is rider rather than a garage queen so go for it!

Re:

Ive had similar problems on Attitudes before.

Once was with a Rock Shox steerer. I had the excess material machined away inside the bottom of the steerer to get the stem down further.

The next time I had an engineering firm cut the angle on the stem a little higher. Its worth getting this done properly. I seem to recall the angle is a little usual at something like 33 Degrees from memory. As Pete said check the thread goes high enough on the bolt. It is a standard thread though so could be threaded higher with a die.
