Klein 1996 Quantum II

Just finished this Klein 1996 Quantum II restomod.

I wanted a ‘cafe’ bike for easy social rides. Having fallen in love with Klein bikes 20 odd years ago, there was only one choice... a Quantum of some description.

Bought the frame and original folks off eBay. Had the usual range of chips and scratches but no dents or cracks. Stripped it back to the bare metal and treated some minor corrosion. Replaced the folks with carbon folks (still have the original ones in case I ever want to go back to the original setup).

Resprayed it myself. With the benefit of hindsight, I would have used a slightly brighter pink but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

Most of the components came from eBay. Excluding my time and the wheels, which I already had, the total build cost was less than £1,000.

I’m now on the lookout for my next Klein project bike.

Great job, and i love the paintjob!

Now, from a purely aesthetical perspective (my own that is), i would probably try to source an ultegra crank to have more uniform shades of black, and add a totally black saddle and bar tape to make the awsome paintjob and those sweet cosmic's pop just a little bit more.

Painted it yourself!!!!! It looks amazing. I assume you have some professional spraying background and didnt just pop into halfords for some tins of spray and get lucky? Can you add some info on how you got it like that please?

Nope, no professional spraying background. However, I’m pretty ‘arty’ and have some experience airbrushing but haven’t picked one up in 20 years.

Bought a secondhand but unused compressor off eBay for £50 and a £50 Sealey HVLP spray gun with a 0.8mm needle/nozzle. The paint come from custompaintshop.com.

Stripped the original paint back to bare metal and then primed it with an epoxy primer. Then coated it in 2k white. Applied the logo masks to achieve the debossed logos.

Then, sprayed the yellow first, followed by the pink, then purple. Then went back to pink, then yellow again using thinner paint to get a really fine fade from one colour to the next.

Removed the masks, and applied 4-5 coats of high gloss clear coat. Used a 2000 grit, followed by 2500 grit wet and dry on the final coat before polishing with t-cut.

The trick is not to rush it and apply thin layers of paint to avoid runs.

This may be a cheeky question then - but now you have bought the spray gun and compressor are you going to be interested in spraying some more frames similar to what you have done to yours?

It’s a possibility. I think I’d need to do a couple more of my own before committing to spaying for somebody else. Plus, it’s well too cold and damp to be spaying outside of a proper spray booth. Maybe check in with me again in Spring to where I’m at.
