Kilauea help...

A good friend of mine has one of these blue Kilauea's. 92/93 sounds right.

He too has owned it since new although he had passed it onto his dad for a few years while he went off playing with Cannondales.

Recently replaced for XC duties by a Cove Stiffie - he is currently thinking about getting it singlespeeded and resprayed.

Here's a few pics that might clear things up...

Funnily enough messiah my Kilauea has had exactly the same life, dad's bike then ss build!

I don’t see any tapering of the top and down tubes there, which is as expected but doesn’t help your cause. The 93 catalogue says of the Cinder Cone “we’ve combined this [the kit] with the super light frame that we used before on the Kilauea …” and in the specs “Tange cromo double-butted main frame and super light rear triangle”, implying that was what the 92 Kilauea was made of, not Tange Concept - and your picture appears to confirm that.

I’m afraid this means that you may struggle to prove that the frame is a Kilauea, although the unique P2 is pretty good evidence. Not that it makes a huge difference in terms of value – the reputation of the Cinder Cone/Lava Dome is so high that Kilaueas aren’t worth all that much more. And it was actually losing the authentic decals that hit the value of the frame the most.

One suggestion – Gil_M on this site (www.thecycleshed.co.uk) makes excellent decals from photographs and if jimbo-xc is the kind of really nice bloke that we think he is, you never know he might even be kind enough to take pics of the decals on his lady’s 92 Kilauea and send them to you for Gil to work from?

Kilauea

Yep, can take some photo's - may take me a day or 2 though. Trouble is there are 1 or 2 extra decals incl a RaceLight one I put on. It's a little 16" frame, same blue colour as those P2's in the pic. but with early Judy XC's.
Perhaps I'll snap my DBR Axis TT-lite (black/white graphics, 1994?) our '91 Trek 7000's & if, anyone here likes road bikes, my 1998 Giant TCR Triathlon & madam's '98 Cannondale 650c racer.
Also there's my v. nice resprayed black Kona 1993?? serial 204041 (can't make out a prefix letter) that I want £150 for to fund a '93 Explosif project (also resprayed darn it.) See earlier post with pic.

Sounds like a very nice feature for the Readers Bikes forum, and could probably date your black 92 or 93 Explosif from a good picture.

thanks for all the help guys.

I think I'm just going to sell the frame as is rather than invest any time or money into it getting it powder coated the original colour or re-decaled.

Expect to see it on e-bay soon!

I'll run it through the classifieds here first with some other bits and pieces.

Cheers,

Phil
