Kilauea help...

Philchris

Retro Newbie
I'm slowly coming round to the idea of selling my Kona Kilauea frame (tragic I know!) but I've had it resprayed in a different colour, wrong decals etc and I wondered if there is any way I can prove its identity to any possible buyers. The Project Twos are the original colour so they help.

Anyway it's the 92/93 version that was released mid season and doesn't appear in any catalogues. It was all flat navy blue, including the forks.

Any help in identifying defining features gratefully received!

Cheers,

Phil

It's a pity you had it resprayed - and from what you say I assume you have no photo of it as it looked previously?

A photo of it now would help, plus the forks, plus the serial number on the bb shell, plus the weight. I'm surprised they were frame-coloured - are you sure that was original?

Yeah positive it was all original. I bought it new when I was about 13 from Leisure Lakes in Tarleton! I even had the review from MBUK for ages but have lost that now. The bike was unusual because it appeared between years, '92 and '93 I think. It was all navy blue rather than a solid colour and black forks.

I'll post a few piccies when I've stripped the frame.

Cheers

Phil

Kilauea age

now that's interesting - my lady's Kilauea is plain dark blue incl the forks (which I later sold) & I've never been able to determine the year. Lots of parts swapped by time we got it. Even looking at the catalogues I can't be sure. Deore thumbies, were still there I'm pleased to say.
Serial no E2041900.

That's it! Deore thumbies (still got 'em!) DX Mech (got that too) Joe Murrray components etc.

It's a relief to find someone else who has seen one of these I think they're hen's teeth rare, I was starting to doubt myself even though I can remember the day I bought it!

Now how to prove what it is!?!

I imagine you may have an E at the start of your serial number too, if you look closely. The 2 at the start of each of these two numbers indicates that the frame was made in 1992 - so it proves that it was either a 92 or a 93 model, but the number proves nothing more than that.

I haven't seen an E before, Fs and Hs yes, but Es no. In which case, you could just be lucky, because the letter signifies which factory built the frame, so it's just possible that the 92 Kilauea was built in a different factory from other models and therefore that the E2 bit establishes it as a 92 Kilauea. Give all the information you have to [email protected] and keep your fingers crossed - he may be able to confirm.

The other point is the tubing - the bike below is Mechagouki's beautiful North American model 1993 Kilauea. Note the tapered top and down tubes - has your bike got that feature? [Not that I think it should have, but I've never seen a 92 Kilauea, so I'm just fishing]

Have you a picture of it to show us?

The Paligap people and Joe@Konaworld were very helpful in identifying my Kilauea + the being able to tell if it has taper tubes as Anthony mentions helps.....

Post a pick there are a good few Kona experts on here.
