Just finished fixing it up...mid 90's(?) something or other

Retro Newbie
Been reading the forum about two weeks now, decided it was about time I started posting. I'll start with a little story...

About 6 years ago my uncle gave me this bike as I'd sheared through a crank on my old Apollo full sus bike I got at the dump. Rode this thing to college for 3 years, then I moved away for uni, brought the bike with me but only took it out a handful of times and did no cleaning or maintenance. Moved back home and decided to get it back up together, I ended up replacing a lot more stuff than I'd anticipated. I did replace the worn stuff with new parts so I apologise if this is seen as sacrilege! Not sure what frame it is, I've only seen one other which came up in this thread the other day, so I'm not sure what it is, other than very light.

Couple after I got back and hosed it down...

Originally I think it had a Deore XT M739 group set, though it does have an M737 crankset and front derailleur.

The crankset, forks, derailleurs, gear shifters and brake levers are all original, tyres I got with the bike, everything else though is new.

Took a load of surface rust off the frame and forks whilst I was tearing everything down and rebuilding it, think it might be coming back after only a week or so. Might look in to powder coating, though I do like the bare metal finish and I really don't want to have to remove and refit the headset.

Looks nice, although I'm not sure about the coloured tyres, but that's just me. :D

Take some close-up shots of the dropouts, cable stops/hangers and seat post clamp, someone might be able to identify it from those. Also, what's the sticker at the bottom of the seat tube? If it says what tube material it is, Tange, Columbus, etc. that may also give some clues as to what it is.

The fact that it has no mudguard eyes or rack mounts points to it being something quite racy.

Sunn made some nice light steel frames and were often chrome finished, but I'm not that familiar with them:

Still a bit mucky from a ride down the woods yesterday, even after being hosed off. Pretty sure that the scratched off part of the label reads 'Fuji', a quick bit of Googling says that Sunn did use Fuji Stout-Lite, could be a mid 90's Sunn Revolt? Not entirely sure though. Here's a few more pictures of those details though.

The tyres are Michelin Wildgripper Jet S I believe, I'm not sure about them myself, I think they're more suited to dry stuff than the thick mud that the countryside seems to be turning into at the moment!

Yes, I think Sunn did use Fuji Stout Light, so that would be my guess. Sunn aren't a brand I'm familiar with, but I've seen some nice examples on this forum.

Frame looks great! What did you use to rub it down to the metal?

Re: Just finished fixing it up...mid 90's(?) something or ot

It was never painted I don't think, there is a clearcoat on it but a lot of it has been worn off

Re: Just finished fixing it up...mid 90's(?) something or ot

Some kind of nickel coating perhaps, Claude Butler also had a similar finish, as do Park Pre but I think they use Tange...

It does like you're going to have to do something to protect it against the rust though, certainly looks like a nice quality frame and well worth looking after :D
