The header says it all really........boiler popped last week and it's been ice inside the windows since...... ......my other half cracked on Sunday and took daughter and herself to in laws but I have made it!!!........the new boiler sits downstairs and is fitted tomorrow........never again will I take a warm shower for granted!.....

That happened to me last November. Old boiler was supplied by Texas Homestores, now that dated it. New ones a fabby Italian condensing boiler, ah the enjoyment of heat and hot water. Another great Roman idea for the freezing British Isles :D

  nice one! our hot water went yesterday, still got heating though.
waiting for the man to come now.
how comes its often around christmas?! never before

had a wash out of the sink, dont want to do that again, its weird!

id rather stink than wash out of the sink

Been wrestling with ours and frozen water pipes all week, just about kept on top of it with help from the internet.

The 'fault' was a ventilation grill in the outside wall from the old warm air heating system, this allowed cold air straight in to freeze the water pipes. Now its blocked off, kitchens way warmer and the boiler seems happy too.

Some strange coincidence with boilers and Christmas. 2 years ago ours went belly up on the 22nd December. The heat exchanger started leaking and the boiler was 20 years old so no spare parts. Called British Gas. Man came out the same day to survey the house, boiler installed next day in a different location. Not the cheapest but the quality of work and the back-up services provided make it worthwhile.

maybe boilers hate crimbo

ps i went without heating for years as a student/part office tower basher/skiving git...used to open the windows in winter to warm the flat up(im not kidding)...one year i actually got frostbitten on me big toe...oh those were the days..pps my father in laws boiler just died too...his gets mended today...

Our condensing combi shut down a couple of days ago. Turns out the condensate? drain pipe, which runs through the kitchen wall to the outside, had frozen all the way back and into the boiler. This caused the boiler to shut down for safety. Luckily wifes mate has a gas engineer brother who lives round the corner. Fixed 3 hours later for £40.

TIP - If you have a condenser which is draining outside, check for frozen pipe and defrost with hot water / hairdryer - it will freeze otherwise.

He said the fitter should always try and fit the drain INSIDE the house into the cold water outlet.
Got to keep an eye on mine now until the big thaw (August?!).

Mine did exactly this on Sunday, the pipe now drains into a bucket inside the house until the spring.
