I'm sure this has been covered on here before, but I couldn't find it, so...

I have some Judy XC forks, 1996 model I think. Elastomers have turned to dust.
How can I tell what travel they are supposed to be? Is the part number on the damper unit? As I gather the travel adjust kits included a different damper rod?

When it comes to replacing the MCU stack, I have the plastic spacers and some suitable elastomer rod (hopefully!), but how do I know what the total stack length should be?
And is there any benefit in using the plastic spacers for the MCU? Or would a single length of elastomer work as well? (istr the Quadra forks have one long elastomer on the legs).

If using MCU, use the spacers as it gives better compression expansion.
If using elastomer, just use the rod.

Do you have skewers on your top caps.
If so they are 50mm, if not then 60mm.

There are many many topics on this, though Google needs to be used to search better.

Have you checked over the legs, bottom of the stanchions often corrode near the lower bushing.
95's always lost oil from the damoer.
96 may have the aluminium damper so may still be usable.

Length is a damper/dummy rod change.

Get some pictures up.

6" rings a bell for overall length, sometimes 6 1/2" but I forget, it's been a few years.

Measure travel with elastomer out.
Compress, mark stanchion.
Pull out and measure travel.

Yep, that mess is normal.
This site has a '96 Judy service guide.
Page 7 lists the different travels and dampers.
Length of the stack?, that's a toughy.
I agree, put it together, compress and measure, extend, measure, and subtract.
BUT, if you are making your own, id start a little long, as you have to allow for the extra length that needs to be compressed for a little preload when putting the caps on.
I considered building some, but luckily we have a company here that sells replacement elastomers, and by the time I built them, and then figured out the whole softness/hardness situation, it was a better solution to just buy right out.
