I'm brilliant at putting diy stuff together though!

me too.
mine's now doing its second lap with my lads who spend hours designing and making stuff. Ive got railway tracks, motors, loads of stuff. Theyve mixed some of their "modern" lego in with it and those bits hardly get used cos theyre dedicated, special-shaped bits which cant be used for general building. Pity lego sets seem highly specialised these days. They dont seem to sell the bits like wheel set, railway couplings etc.

I estimate that there is around £8,000 worth in the loft. Sadly, some of the sets are now worth a lot of money, which is a shame as I hate to think of everything in a monetary term but thats how I've been conditioned.
