Is there such a thing as 7 speed STI's?

Shimano ST A070 are modern STI's that are for older 7 speed systems, if that's of any use to anyone.

Is that the Tourney ones? I've seen some of those...

...on another matter why is it that road STI's are soooo expensive looking at £70 odd for Tourney and if you want Tiagra £130....Dura Ace £250!!!!! MTB shifters look a bargain in comparison!

Yes they are the Tourney group - 1 step below Sora, but still reasonable quality.

They will work with all older Shimano 7-speed or compatible cassettes. http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/shifters.html#brifters

Manufacturer costs. They are so expensive because they are probably the most technically engineered part of a drive train, i.e the most moving parts, all tiny small parts that require high tolerances and high grade machined materials/steels, etc....my bet is they are the most time-consuming component in the drive train to assemble, with several robots and skilled human labor 'finishers'.

The older Campag (Mirage etc) 9 speed were less mechanical and thus you could get them cheap when new about 8 to 10 years ago, something like 69 quid compared to 140 quid for Tiagra. They could also be serviced and taken apart.

Now another thing I have heard is that 8 speed Campy Ergo shifters would work with 7 speed...

Yes, but of course you need a pre-2001 Campag mech to match.
Campag 7 and 8 speed have the same 5.0mm pitch, unlike Shimano who narrowed the pitch when they went to 8.

A Campag 7 setup will run fine on a Shimano 7 cassette as the spacing is identical.

Just the thought of mixing campy with shimano makes one feel 'dirty'.

So Campag 7 speed shifters would work on a 7 speed shimano cassette...what about the rear mech would that mean either Campag or Shimano??

Perhaps that why I am thinking about it coming from an MTB background!! That and I am pretty deviant too!

As I said at the beginning of the post, it has to be a pre-2001 Campag rear mech. From 2001 onwards they changed the pull per click of their system. - which was always incompatible with Shimano anyway.

Shimergo worked very well for me. I used 8 speed ergos with a 7 speed Shimano cassette for a while with no problems.
