Interesting indeed (I shall try to sit and read it properly at some point  )

even the best pedaling stylists don’t produce power when they pull up on the backstroke

Not what I was led to believe (by a bloke selling me some XT SPD's in 1993/4) ;)

Mountain Bikers Most Closely Approach the “Ideal” Pedal Stroke

Agree. plus don't recumbents have the best pedal stroke? I certainly found them faster than 'normal' bikes

that does seem contradictory. he states that no cyclist produces power on the upstroke but later suggests turbo trainer exercises pulling up on the back struke. if it were to produce no power then it is surely a waste of energy??

dosnt it say that most cyclist dont use power on the back stroke?
not that they cant?
meaning it can be done, just people dont?
but surely when your leaning over the handlebars, standing up you must get some power onto the back stroke

"And one of the things we know is that even the best pedaling stylists don’t produce power when they pull up on the backstroke. The most they can hope for is to unweight the rear foot so it adds less drag to the power output of the foot that is pushing downward. But it’s not possible even to get the back foot out of the way entirely."

Isn't he just describing 'spinning*', something I've been doing since I was young.
Though I must say it was a lot easier back then as I was much fitter, I quite often default to the lazy thump thump on the old pedals.

*or at least what I call spinning
