Insurance ideas for a Vintage Colnago please.

I hope somebody can help me, I need to insure my lovely bike. I would like an insurance policy to cover my bike out of the house too.

I have acquired a completely pristine 1982 – 1984 Colnago Mexico or Super. After many months of research I believe (hope) it is a 1982 Mexico. It had only done 12 miles since new! It now has a few hundred miles on it. It is my main ride – when not raining!

I need to insure it, and l am thinking of specific bike insurance for it. Can anybody recommend a suitable bicycle specific insurer to me.

The best insurer I can come up with is ETA. I would also like a realistic valuation figure – if possible. A brief description of the bike is below:

It is Saronni/burgundy red, with yellow decals, and yellow in fills. Chrome front fork, and chain stay. Tyres, spokes, hoods, and handlebar tape have been replenished. It has a 1983 PAT Campagnolo Super Record road/group set, Cinelli bars, and unicantor saddle. Mavic G40 rims (un-marked until I rode them) It looks (almost) brand new, just a couple of negligible chips/marks from being moved by the previous owner.

Thanks for your time.

Sounds lovely; would be great to see some pics.

I suggest somewhere between £750 and £1000 for insurance purposes. I have a very similar one advertised on here for £850, but no takers yet. It can be a bit difficult to judge, as they don't come up very often and sometimes go for silly prices elsewhere, especially with good condition original paint/chrome.

Just out of personal interest, what makes you come down on the side of Mexico rather than Super? I've been trying to work out which mine is (I've pinned it down to 82, I think, but the Super/Mexico distinction seems a bit random around that time -- before the crimped tubing came in, I think).

My advice would be to not crash it or get it stolen!

Thanks for the help, I will photograph it when I find the time. It is really lovely, beautifully made and quite superb to ride.

The colour and decals are the same as other images I have seen on the web, of Mexicos, of various ages. I have not seen a Super with the colour and decals of my bike - I am not saying that they do not exist.

I have seen a NOS 1982 Mexico (on the web) with all the same details as mine - except colour! Something a relative of the previous onwner said, also suggests it may be a Mexcio.

I can conclude from all the research, that I have done, that the only true way to tell the difference (between some Supers and Mexcios (pre- Nuovo Mexico)) is to cut them in half and measure the tubing wall thickness! If you had a reference weight (for the frame size) then you could strip the bike and weigh it - but that is a complete waste of time. I believe the difference between the two is only about 200g in weight. They were both top racing bikes.

I really hope it does not get stolen, or that I crash it!!!!
