Thumbies were mentioned by the OP, but for me they are the pinnacle of mechanical simplicity at a time when things just worked.

I still think bar ends are a great thing. Ripe for misuse, mis-positioning and malignment, but as a concept to get a different hand position/weight balance they work. No longer seen though.

Decent fitted mudguards. Uncool to the max bro, but so is a backside and face full of local countryside and farm animal byproducts.
