Inch threaded to inch threadless

Whilst looking for a set of temporary forks for my Orange until I can afford something decent,a friend has given me some inch threaded forks with a good long Steerer tube.Now they are far to long for my bike,but Im wondering if they could be modded?
I would like to cut the tube down and use it like ahead type system.Ive had a measure up and there is plenty off steerer to go at.
Also,are inch star nuts and top caps easy to get hold of?

The normal recommendation is that you do not clamp the ahead stem onto the threaded portion of the fork - so if the steerer is really long then you should be fine.

You will need an ahead headset, these usually come with the 1" star nut and top cap. In reality, all you need is the top part of the headset, the lower race is the same for ahead and threaded headsets.

Was going to mention a quill adapter but the one I saw was 1" to 1 1/8
