i add a post related to the first post without reading where it's all going and re-read and find out it's turned into class ism.

Your response was the kind of thing I was expecting and somehow it's all gone a bit poo

blimey! i have just read this thread. how the hell did such a innocent thread turn into a class/money/tube bunfight?

Craig (Chiswickcollectables) made an open comment about how cold it was/is and decided to hit the tube instead of riding and it turned in to a rant about someones paycheck.

i too think it's blinkin cold (and windy) outside so instead i have been fettling my bikes in the garage . . . . does anyone want to have a go at me for not riding today? oh and i used a train to go to london the other day, train driver seemed like a nice enough bloke, not that i chatted with him about his wage.

:)

Well i thought it was pretty clear it was all a bit tongue in cheek, but clearly not...next time i'll give my mega robot lasers and we can all stay at home.

Anyway snow predicted for saturday and it was bloody cold today as well my nose feels like an icicle, if its this cold tomorrow i'm driving in and with the comfort of heating (i know i'm a big jessie) I need to let my bones thaw out.

The thing that I find shocking is the total display of animosity between fellow working class people.
Tube drivers aren't working class, sorry but they just aren't...when someone is earning nearly double the average national wage i think that puts them firmly in the middle class bracket regardless of education etc.
So income dictates class in the class system, then?

How much do they earn?

Edit:

Infact i'm not even going to get into it or else this will descend into something that it wasn't meant to be.

Cycling back tonight now the sun has gone down is going to be horrible i can just sense it, i rode over a puddle this morning just for the icy crunchy goodness.

Erm possibly came from the recent stories where the RMT with fat git council house dwelling £100k+ per annum Bob Crow is turning down an already generous £500 bonus per worker for every one in his union, simply for doing there fecking menial job during the olympics, a job for which they are already massively overcompensated for.

Essentially blackmailing more money by making the early noises of industrial action.

I am normally all for workers rights, but when the worker could be replaced by a suitably weighted bag of sand I do think its pretty disgusting to hold a city to ransom over yet another money grab.

Hmmm... very unusual to receive such an attack from a person I don't think I've crossed paths with before. If we have crossed paths in the past and I caused you offence then my sincere apologies.

With the greatest of respect Sir, a lot of (incorrect) assumptions are being made above; mainly about what I do for a living, which organisation I am employed by and my personal opinions relating to Bob Crow the RMT.

Regardless of you despising me for the job you think I do, next time you're in London lets go for a spin on the bikes.... I'd like you to get to know me; hopefully you'd conclude that my existence is worth more than a bag of sand and that my family are worthy enough to receive food and shelter, and you might find out that I wouldn't think twice about doing whatever I could to help a fellow human.

If of course none of the above is directed at me then I've clearly got the wrong end of the stick..... let's go out for a ride anyway

In all due respect to you Sir, you seem to have made the assumption I was referring to you. As eloquent and tactfully retorted as your post was, I request you re-read this thread and understand where my comments came into it.

and I thought it was because of the 4 day week, 9 weeks holiday, £40k a year for pushing a little button...

Ouch.. where did that come from  ?

I was referring to and expanding on suburbanrueban's post on the first page, to which you responded.

My complaints were aimed primarily at the RMT union whose recent newsworthy actions had riled me once again. I hold no personal grudge, hatred or vendetta towards any one working on the underground. I can't say I know any personally but if I did I am sure I would be happy to have them as a friend.

My complaint centers around the RMT and its strength in being able to hold the entire city to ransom over what on the reported surface appear to be often unreasonable demands.

The bag of sand comment was a little spiteful on my part, of course a train driver does more than operate a dead-mans handle. But do they really deserve a good deal more recompense than a junior doctor, or twice the wage of a nurse or teacher (whilst at the same time having good deal on working hours too!). The DLR operates quite nicely without drivers and it would improve service dramatically if the tube network followed suite.

At the end of the day every time the RMT calls a strike it effects hundreds and hundreds of thousands if not millions of people. Many of these peoples finances are directly affected by the actions of the RMT, and many more affected indirectly. Is it right for a union representing people who genuinely have an excellent deal as it stands, to hold a city of millions to ransom at a whim?

My reference to a "council house dwelling" Bob Crow is meant in disgust that some one reputed to be on over £100k PA is/was able to take up council housing that could be used for people who really need it. I am actually quite offended that any one on here would think I was referring negatively to the populous of this country in council housing.

So I don't really know why you thought I was having a pop at you, not once did I make any assumption about you. I was simply expanding on a comment made by another user that you seemed to question.

Now for the first time in this thread I will make an assumption about you based on what I have seen of your response to my original post:
I am sure you are a Gentlemen, a delightful sort of a chap and well meaning. Perhaps a little quick to grab at the wrong end of any stick that finds its self in close proximity to you but none the less a nice chap. Albeit a little soft for giving up the bike for the tube the second the temperature gets a bit nippy.

Unfortunately I am now picturing you a little like Tim nice but dim.

I also assume you have a sense of humour (fingers crossed)

Train driver pay is pretty similar ~+5k -5k over most of the UK.

Pay tends to reflect responsibility amongst other things.

I reckon it is fair enough.
Tell that to the bus drivers...

Bus drivers used to get paid a lot but then came de regulation and competion between companies, plus the fact that the good old dss had a spell of paying for as many unemployed people as possible to do the psv licence driving the wages down even further. The same has happened in the haulage industry as well :(

I think the telling fact is the following:

If one were to join the army (to defend freedom, liberty, etc?), in order to earn as much as a tube driver one would have to atttain the rank of Major!

Are we really arguing that a tube driver has more responsibility than an army captain?
