I'm going to harm the next person I see...

Isnt the fact someone is riding it good enough no matter what form the bike takes on?

Im not 100% sure the whole 'fashionista' comments apply to everyone either?
I see single speeds as a viable occasional alternative.

As xenophobic as it sounds, I would totally ride a single speed if I were the last man on Earth (in the right setting). Therefore it cant be just a fashion thing, right?

Gears rock, SS's roll.

Ruining a perfectly good frame by making it a single speed.

The mech hanger is there for a reason.

Fact.

Does the extra weight that a couple of gears bring make that much difference?

Couple of gears ,its usually 24 gears ,but as you mention it,theres also cables, cable outers, mounting bolts, shifters, etc.

I don't mind people doing it as long as they don't split a nice original bike or start grinding bits off the frame :?

I've always had a fixed gear bike in the stable but it only comes out in the dead of winter now to avoid any risk of being associated with the dayglo deep section rim or Aerospoke crowd

And I was just thinking about cutting of my mech hanger and stops on mt 29er...maybe I'll hold fire on that now!

It's not the extra weight that makes the difference. It's the weakness of character that develops from knowing you can downshift.
