So, I'm sitting here pondering just how it is that our receptionist got away with 42 days off sick last calendar year, especially with excuses like "I've mislayed my mother" (only to have the afore mentioned 'lost' parent ring up at lunch oblivious to here disappearance), all because someone had pointed out to me that if you thought about it, there wasn't a week went by that she wasn't off at least a day.

And it got me thinking, after I stopped laughing, that I reckon there wasn't a week went by last year that I wasn't embarking on one more bike related purchase/ solution/ re-build/ completion. I have looked at the numbers and have come up with one a week.

Not that bad. I know for one that there are worse addicts on this site. Many. And much worse. It has however struck me that I can't get closure on these bloody machines.

When I get them insured or re-insured every year (depending on their hiararchy in the family setup) I tell myself they are worth 'x' amount. But they're not are they? They're worth five times that because they keep getting re-built. Over and over again. Unnecessary transplants. Experimented on like poor lab creatures, getting their old organs flogged off to other evil medical practitioners all over the world ready to mutate their pride and joy in a similar (often) grotesque manner.

I need to get closure. Every purchase tells me 'this is it, this is finallly done'.

But it's not.

It never is is it?

Anyway, I've narrowed it down to one mission a week.

What are you up/ down to?

It's human nature. The reason us humans were successful as a species because we we the first to say, I wonder what's over the horizon over there... we're inquisitive, 'wonder what that bit would like on that frame?', colaborative 'how do you fit this grommet spundler to this frame?', adventurous 'do these colours clash? oh who cares!'...

don't worry, it's how we became who we are. You're just expressing that. :D

and BTW, the uk average is 11 days sickness a year. Given that I never take time off for sickness that means somebody else has taken 22 days... go figure.

I cant rember the last time I have a day off sick, as I work from home I am not sure if any one would notice any way.

As people who cycle we are hopefully in better shape than a lot of the population (even if we are holding onto a few extra pounds) and in a better position to fight off any infection we may pick up from the office pipeline.

The last time I can recall being sick - BITH when I over trained, maybe training for a 800K audax that was 1 week after a I ran a sub 3 hour marathon was a bit much.

Just Chillin

Hi Wu,

I know what you mean, I am self employed (Landscaper) and sometimes end up working, in the summer about 10-12 hours a day on sites , then having to come home, organise the materials/men/schedules/wages/bills/receipts etc for the next day/week or even month, then look after, me mrs and little one, then everything else, "can you just nip to the shop" I hear in the background from the good lady.. yes no problem !! thinking bloody hell! its ok I've been working 15 hours today anyway, what difference does it make 'just nipping' to the shop, Whey ! ya know I'm the sithlord after all ..

Then on top of that I am thinking , when do I fit the bike in .. ?

And I do...

Then you look at staff and they are saying "god I just worked a 42 hours week this week" :o :o , and I'm feelig poorly... Ahh!
Its so hard, And they phone up next day at 10 O'oclock and say Errr I'll have to pull a sicky Si cos me cats not very well or the rubber plants looking less shiny this week'

Really, some people just use any excuse to get outta work, I thinks they should get a mountain bike addiction, cos I hav'nt had a day off sick for .. errrr cant remember.. always working... cant afford not to work.. need to pay for the next part for the project... the biking keeps ya fit when I have time, I think that is the Key? make people see the Dark Side...

    Shit, I spend w-a-y too long looking for and buying parts every single weekday...it's a bike OCD kind of thing

It never happened until I joined here though...I've had an RC200 for 10 years, got it explicitly covered on house insurance and that was that....everything went wrong in October 2007 when I found this site and since then I have spent a scary amount of cash on replacing perfectly good parts on the Pace and buying another 3 bikes.....and I buy multiple things each week....sometimes multiple things each day

Oh and hardly ever off sick....ever :)

I know what you mean, I spend a lot more time fiddling and fettling the machines than I do actually riding them, but for me that's part of the fun.

There is light at the end of the tunnel though.....I've got a plan......honest

i buy bits in bursts - once my incoming bike is finished, that'll be it for a while. i probably average a couple of parts a month over a year.

been out of uni and in work around 18 months

had 2 days off sick in that time - the last one was because i was hallucinating. the mrs on the other hand is always ALWAYS sick

i'm pretty sure it's because she never does all the things she accuses me of being "disgusting" for, and because she never allows a room she is in below about THREE MILLION degrees centigrade

And the view of the Beach must be kinda medicinal anyways! Beach Town L.A., where you at; Newport? Redondo? Manhattan?

I am of the opinion that if someone is sick/ill genuinely, they need to be at home. None of this Martyr bullsh*t, no one wants your flu/cold/bug - Go home!

However, that said, I have been known in the past to pull a sickie when the swell rolled into Sydney  Obvious? Maybe, but if you work good the rest of the time then they've got nothing to complain about really..

However, back to Wu's original point [which I just had to scroll down to find!], about one day a week for me yes  This week it shall be Sunday; clean the GT, set it up for its first week of commuting and sort a few parts to sell/swap 8)

I never take time off sick (well, I had a week off a few years ago, but that was with a broken finger and the Dr signed me off as I wasn't allowed to drive).

I'm in the office usually 7.30am to 5ish PM, but then I work some evenings, weekends.....whenever there is a money making opportunity!

However, RB.co.uk is always running on my PC when I'm in my office, with the occasional purchase/sale being done.

I'm always looking in MTB chat, Off Topic, Readers Bikes......its a drug.....

Then at home, hi wife, hi kids, dinner, load dishwasher.....NEED to be on RB again.....

God, I think I'm giving more of my life to this site and my bikes than I am my family.....
