IG Chain

Hi, just been looking at a XT Chainset on ebay but the buyer says IG chain only? Will i be able to run my current standard Shimano chain? What is an IG chain?

IG (Interactive Glide) is a slight advancement to HG (Hyper Glide).

It adds profiling/ramping on the cassette for the upshift as well as up downshift.
HG had downshift only profiling.

The sprockets are also slightly thicker requiring a wider chain. Don't remember the IG name continuing with the 8 (or 9) speeds though. It was 7 speed based afaik.

ANYWAYS, I have no idea what this has to do with a chainset.

I've been mixing IG and HG components for years, as long as they're all 7/8 speed then they'll work perfectly.

Others claim 9sp components are completely compatible with 7/8sp , but i've no experience of mixing these (never seen the point).
