Not only do you have a cool avatar...but I think I may also love you too. Ill let you know the size of the seat post tomorrow(bikes in Garage and its cold outside ha!) But according to the Sheldon Brown website say a 94ish Hard rock seat post is 26mm

Wookiee by name Wookiee by nature! Let me know if there is anything else you need...might have a freebee saddle too! Loads of people on this site have helped me out over the years and its good to keep that vibe going!

Well, haven't had a chance to try the gears out yet due to the slightly rusted chain.......the rear derailleur looks a bit on the iffy side.. but being a bit of a n00b its probably normal.

200gs isn't bad and to be honest I dont have any rear mechs spare at the mo...no point sticking XTR on there but your Hardrock would have been a £300 machine back in the day and that equates to a £500-600 machine today.

The rear end does feel a bit on the heavy side, but if the gears work Im not really intending on changing all that in the short term. Bought the bike as a cheap way to get back on the trails after selling my Carrera Kraken :-(

Rear end heavy-ness is unlikely to be the rear mech more likely the wheels/tyres that are weighty...at the end of the day you need to get out there and ride it once it is functioning...then decide what you want to upgrade...

Re:

Well seat post is recently 26mm. So if you have those lieing around plus seat and spare canti breaks that would be more than awesome. Forgetting to actually count the rear gears and the pictures I've got I can't tell if there is 8 or 9 at the back....will have to check when I get home.

Ok mate, I'm at work at the moment but I'll see what I have got when I get in tonight.

Re:

Right after a rummage this is what I can offer...

Of all the seatposts I have I don't have a 26mm! The smallest I have is a 27mm

I have 2 saddles both gel. 1 Selle Royal, 1 Lookin you choose...

A full set of cantis 1 STX smokey colour, the other I think are XT silver with 4 berely used shimano M system pads. I don't have the bolts to attach them the the frame but your old one might do...if not you can easily get some from your local bike shop.

If you want them let me know which saddle and PM me your postal address :D

Doug

Re:

If I were you the first thing I'd do is check the bits that move:
Wheels, head bearings, bottom bracket, pedals - are they running smooth? If not then clean, grease, replace bearings as required. If still not smooth then seek advice on the forum - you'll find plenty help (I have - thanks to all :D )

Brake levers, gear shifters & cables. Clean and lube controls. Clean and lube cables. Replace cables and outers if needed (cheap but can make a big difference).

Front and rear mechs. Clean them. Spray 'em with WD40 or some such and make sure they move freely. Then check limit adjusters move and do their job of setting limits. Adjust. Lots of "how to" video on youtube etc.

Chain. With chain on bike and on big front ring try to lift chain off the front of the front ring. If it lifts off the ring more than 3 or 4 mm it is knackered. Replace. Rusty chains rarely come back to life and a new chain can make everything so much smoooootherrr. Money well spent.

Check wheels for true. If wobbly get a spoke key and adjust. Top "how to" video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcZ1jjB_AdQ

I'd replace that ugly saddle for sure. But everything else I'd see what works/don't work first then prioritise.

And enjoy it.
cheers
