So...

After having to spend 15 days soaking the front fork in Caustic soda to remove a stem shaft and then taking this little lot down to be blasted and coated I was left with a really nice frame that I couldnt wait to ride...

All bits where sourced and ready the tea was made and the workshop lights turned on,, So the build started!!!!! 3 Hours later I had this..

TBH I was well chuffed and was ready to put in some miles before doing London 2 Paris...

2 mins into the first ride the seatpost binding attachment snap's  :( :x

It's a direct frame seat clamp and the frame is a Steve Goff thinking early 90's.. Any options for a repair you think???

VERY PI$$ED OFF.........

That's a bummer... Why did it snap? is the seatpost the correct size, or is it too small and the clamp was overtightened?

Maybe you could cut/file it off and use a modern clamp?

The seatpost was correct size but thinking at some point someone has over tightened and weakened it,

I will get a pic up in the morning..

I dont think there is enough tube to take a modern clamp, I did think to file down and see about getting something sorted but for the moment I cant even look at it...

Hi Trini :-) "Buy an internally binding seat post" Think of a Handlebar stem in the forks, this is kept in place by the locknut cone pulling up into the stem. It spreads and tightens without any damage.

I know these seatposts exist because my Turbo Mecacycle has 1 :-)

There are 2 types to my knowledge, 1 that is an out & out seatpost (expensive and hard to source) the other, is a sort of adapter but you'll have to use an old style seatclamp on your saddle.

Liquid metal the broken piece back on carefully and leave the seatpost binder in place. To all intents and purposes you bike will look the same, but the seatpost WILL be solid and OK to ride.

Hope this helps some, yours Laz.

Can't offer any advice, but just wanted to say I'm gutted for you :( What a shame. Hopefully the suggestions above can resolve it for you.

Thanks for the support fella...

Laz:: That could be the option I was looking for 8)

Im going to head down to my local "cheap" bike shop and see if they have one of those Raleigh seat clamp brackets and possibly even try and do something myself later today as finding one of those seat post's ready made in a 27.2 is going to be like finding hence teeth in rocking horse (dont need to say anymore)

I just need to dig out an old quill wedge take some measurements and see what can be done!!!!....

I will post up some pics when I get a min...

Hi again Ray :-) "I've got a 26.0mm silver kalin seatpost here about 12inches long (going from your pic you need a long 1). It came off another bike I had, so is surplus.

If you want I'll machine this to a 27.2mm with ALL the correct shims for the seattube and make the wedge. It will tighten from under the seatclamp area, so will be invisible once the saddle is re-fitted. I have access to lathes and milling machines and am timed served so, its not a DIY job :-)

£25 to your door if you want it :-) Problem solved. If you want it, get back to me asap so its ready for when you need it :-) Yours Laz.
