Idiot Needs Help

Hi chaps,

I've finally rebuilt my Marin IFT but I have one slight problem with it. When changing gears usually 2/3/4 on any of the rings the gears keeps slipping like it halfway between changing gears.

When you're off the bike all the gears change fine but when you put my considerable weight on it it starts to happen. Getting bloody annoying when going up hill


Would this be a rear mech issue?

I doubt it's your rear mech.
Sounds more like either your chain or cassette is worn, or both.

The chain will 'stretch' as it wears and will no longer engage properly onto the cassette sprockets. Shifting works fine, but when you put pressure through the drive train it starts slipping. This effect is pronounced on the smaller sprockets which have less teeth to engage with, thus will slip even more readily.

Also often happens when you put a new chain onto a worn cassette. Either way it probably means some parts could do with replacing.

Just an update though although it has been a new chain put on an oldish used cassette when it slips it eventually drops up or down a gear then starts again .
It's like it can't decide which gear to put me in so I'll be riding down the road when I click into 2nd ring 3 gear then it will slip then it feels like it goes in fourth then slips back down a gear etc etc.

I must admit I took the bike to a "reputable" bike shop to get it road worthy and they obviously haven't even ridden the bike to test it.
Bit peeved really as I spent the best part of 200 quid on bits for it as well from them.

I think the new chain on an old cassette identifies the problem then.

A new cassette should sort it out. A good bike shop should really have been able to identify this at the time of repair.
Perhaps explain the problem to them and then insist that they supply a new cassette at cost and then fit it for free.

It's a five minute job to fit one, so they'd be cheeky to charge labour for something that should have been included when you took it in the first time.

One other one which got me in the past like this was a damaged gear cable outer. The outer was partly burst - any pressure on the pedals caused it to ghost shift upwards, and then to change back down under lighter pedaling.

i had a similar problem just recently, turns out one of the chain link pins was ever so slightly too far in and was catching on the sprocket above.

maybe an idea to just check that before going ahead and spending money.
