Identifying Raleigh Tandem

Dave Hall

Retro Newbie
I have recently acquired a Raleigh male/male tandem, bearing no identifying decals, due to powder coating over bare metal. I intend to adorn this beautiful machine, with replacement equipment to suit, but would like to know what year this machine was produced. Does anyone out there know where such info. can be sourced.
Notable features are the frame geometry, the superb lug work, the eccentric crank axle on the pilot position & the grease nipples at the major rotating components.

Welcome :)

Any pictures? It might be my aged brain but I can't remember ever clapping eyes on a tandem made by Raleigh.

I have pictures of the bike, which I can submit by e-mail, if you offer your address.
The seller of the bike assured me that it was a Raleigh, & I have witnessed similar style on Raleigh derivatives, such as BSA.

Re:

Hi Dave.
First, when tandems were popular, mid to later 1930s, BSA and Raleigh were competitors, years away from both being taken on by TI and disappearing.

Detail pictures of lugs, fork ends etc. should help.

Use a picture hosting site or PM me with some sharp detail pics.

The eccentric front bottom bracket was a standard on most UK tandems, for adjustment of the front chain. When I used a tandem I drove the rear direct from the front, to get a better chain line. But we could easily get 50 MPH on a slight decline.

Hi Keith, I have pictures as described, but I don't understand what you mean by "a picture posting site" or PM. Sorry

PM is Private Message. There is a little icon at the bottom of each post, usually has a little list, profile, pm, email, website and so on. Click on the one that says pm, and it'll take you to the private messenger, where you can attach pictures.
Picture hosting site (not posting) is something like Flickr or Google drive where you can store your digital pictures then send a link to anyone so they can see them too.

Hi Keith,

I was actually applauding your memory :). I sometimes struggle to remember what I had for breakfast LOL

If Dave sends me the pics at [email protected] I'll host them on here :)
