Identifying a Zaskar

Old School Hero
I have for the last 8 years a zaskar that has been my pride and joy.

After finding this site I am now renewing the bike.

Anyway from the code on the bike, I can tell as follows:

- 6061
- June 1997 bike.

However, this bike is jet black and I know this is the original colour. Import from the USA - I believe.

Anyway I have tried to look at the various index/history sites and none make reference to a black zaskar from this age - does anyone know of anything :?: :?:

Thanks for the help.

Stuart,
The Zaskar was never sold as a complete black bike. There was a Zaskar LE Black anodized frame set available through GT's Tech Shop program. Just like the Aqua, Purple and Red anodized frames. None of those were catalog'd complete bike colors....... however a few of these ano colored frames did get built as complete bikes. I worked for a GT distributor and recall having some complete colored Zaskar LE's in inventory. Hope this helps you.

Hi thanks,

But was is the difference between an LE and a Zaskar

The bike isn't annodised - jet black with red GT Zaskar stickers. I have seen another one on ebay (uk) a few months ago :?

Is there anyway that I can check with GT

Sure you can send them an email through their website but keep in mind the people that answer weren't working for them in 1997 and quite frankly nobody in that office was either. So you're saying yours is painted or powder coated? If so them I don't think it's original paint. Are the decals 1997 model year? I have an LTS-1 frame from 97 with a black ano front and a red ano rear.

PICTURE please

Thanks for the help.

Pictures attached - checked the serial and the year is June 1997 make.

I believe the bike was imported direct from the UK, purchased in 1998 - I then bought in beginning 2000 from Maclaens in Worcester and specialist MTB shop.

Anyway any help appreciated.

Stuart

Thanks, just been looking at the 'paint' and it does look annodized - never really noticed before - just that it shines up nice 8)

Were these quite rare then?

In 2000 GT brought out the Zaskar X, which was all black. This must have been close to the last of the US made Zaskars.
