There's more to getting mpg than a bloody Pius!

I'll challenge any Pruis owner to get better mpg than my VW as easily as I do

What, you want to see it?
Well I dont have pictures of it, but its a 2002 VW Lupo 1.9SDi, similar to this (but not modified)

and I get over 420miles to a 30litre tank (usually brim it with around 28litres), which has averaged over the last 6months, 68.9mpg

So what if its diesel?

Wrong, got my XC and the wifes Hybrid in it for a weekend away... no roof boxes, no bike carriers, just the back seats down

Yeah but... SDI? 65 rip snorting bhp?

WHo gives a monkeys?
My Saab ahd 235 rip snorting BHP, and 285lb/ft torque

Trouble is, it would have cost me £3200 in petrol to commute per year, whereas the Lupo saves me just under £2000 per year at £1300

At times when I a) lost my job, and b) am now lucky to work 4days a week, I couldnt give a toss about bhp

I have never been interested in BHP my thing was always the ability to climb hills laden, and I did once do a 45 slope with my old camper from a standing start on the slope, it doesn't sound like much, but 45 degrees is a scary angle and only a surprise the emergency brake was holding, but those drums were big and my brakes well sorted. How did I know it was around 45 degrees, well I was told it was after and the road I was on was labelled unfit for motor vehicle- oops, but once on it, there was no going down, the only way was up, but should have realised how bad it was by the piled tarmac at the start of the road, as tarmac migrates when it gets hot, always a sure sign gravity is at work for a reason.

VW SDI models are terrible - drovve them for two years and hated it. If you don't want to get anywhere fast that is.

Keep in mind mine cost $1,000 USD and came out in 1991 with a 3 cylinder 1.0 liter single cam motor.. All though.... Ship me one of those and I will also be pleased with the millage. I would try to hyper mile it. I want to be the only on the road with one of those in my area. :D

Harsh - in bigger cars, that's probably fair enough, but in the smaller models, they're adequate, pretty economical, and mostly very robust.

That are diesels, though...
