Could I get away with one instead of a laptop? My laptop is on its last legs and all I really use it for it browsing the net with the occasional use of word and to print stuff off.. oh and to put CDs on to itunes. Is there any usb post type things on an ipad so I could rig it up to a printer, externat disc drive? Thanks Rob

I'm not aware of a way to connect a CD drive to an iPad and certainly no apps to rip CDs. There are wireless printer apps though.
For the price of an iPad though you may be better off with a cheap laptop and an Android tablet, something like a Nexus 7 or 10.

or get a tablet and rebuild the laptop for printing etc, strip it right down (we have two old laptops both running ubuntu for that very reason)

weeellll.

you can :

1) print from an iPad, but only to an AirPrint printer
2) connect a (wireless) keyboard
3) use pages (mac word processing software) or I believe that you can get a mobile version of the latest version of office.

but no - the CD is a sticking point. I suppose you could just purchase music from the store direct...

TBH I use an iPad for a lot, but I do have a computer as well - somethings are just better suited on a computer!

rebuilding the machine as an unbuntu client might work, but you would loose iTunes (no version on linux!).

Cheap option:
Get a Tesco Hudl, £119. Plenty enough for surfing and media consumption.

Retire the laptop to ripping and printing duties. Network it and use it as a media server. Stick it in a cupboard with the screen saver on. Access the media from the tablet, do the printing and ripping via RDP for Android (if you're using Windows).

Huxley I'd grab the argos/tesco nexus7 (2012) refurbished for that price.

But ipad people like to lock themselves into the apple world . They do just work though but you pay a pricefor It
