Slightly unfair comment I'd say.
Practically every new member who says hello or asks questions on here is welcomed rather than mocked. That is how we hope it shall remain.

If any members choose to make fun or be cruel to new members then they will be dealt with accordingly.

I would prefer a front suspension bike, not sure about frame material but the budget would be between £350-500

sorry but I burst out laughing at that ^^^^

you need to define lightweight. my idea of lightweoight is clearly not the same as yours - I've recently spent 1/2 your budget on a pair of wheels ffor my lightweight build - not trying to show off but remember the saying: cheap and lightweight and reliable - choose 2.

I think I will ask the crucial question here:

How tall is he?

no offense intended but how is it possible to give any advise with such a generic question? It is like me asking you to recommend me a car?

...you are right regarding many people in here being ever so nice to each other, not only the newbies. That is in fact one of the great properties of this forum. I could rephrase and say that some people in here seems to enjoy making fun of newbies and others who may not have their level of knowledge.

Is it really so hard to give a straight answer....?

Sorry for being so vague he is 6ft 4in. It would be for mostly road use with the occasional frolic off the beaten track.
For the weight around the 25lb mark if possible on a budget.

Its a good budget for a second hand bike. You could even sort something with discs given the weight of a 6.4" rider is usually higher than average.

Where are spence and ed?..........air traffic control request informing when they ride on hills!.....both ride gates with head tubes that look like seat tubes!.... :D

Don't worry about it.

For someone as tall as 6 feet and 4 inches you would normally choose the largest frame size from most manufacturers.

I'm fairly tall myself (6feet 2 1/2 inch) so I know a little about the contradiction involved in trying to achieve lightweight and large frames.

For retro bikes I would reccomend to steer away from steel frames. Large light weight steel frames are rarely very stiff. In addition steel gets even "looser" as they are used and get older. That can happen to alu frames also but usually not to the same extent and they are also basically stiffer than steel.

Try to find a nice aluminium frame. Typically you would look for frames sizes like 20,5 and 21 measured from center to center. However...!...be aware that manufacturers also measure their frames differently so you will have to investigate this a bit further when you want to buy a frame before you make a purchase. Ask around when you have something concrete.

I wish I could give you a good advice about what alu frame to look for but there are many other's in here that have more knowledge about this than me. I know a little bit about Kleins but they are not suited for tight budget builds.

Marin may be something to look for. Nail Trail and Indian Fire Trail are frame names that I remember from back in the days. Solid good frames from a classic manufacturer of offroad cycles. But I really don't know about prices and availability.

I'm also sure there are many other options. Hopefully someone else in here will give you good advice.

Good luck! :-)
