I didn't touch it

I heard a report on the radio that the soon to be rolled out 4G mobile thing will interfere with digital TV signals rather badly.

Al, looks like we will all be watching no telly soon.

Not sure how that would be aas the 4g network uses the bands recently vacated by analogue TV. That was the whole reason for the switchover as telecoms were screaming for more bandwidth and the analog network suddenly became very valuable.

Before this descends into mess of non information, google your TV model and see if it is a known fault. I have had a few samsungs repaired this way.

Done a few of these with folk at work. Usually a letter quoting the Sale of Goods Act will get you a new one. Think you are covered for 6 years as above which kinda makes a mockery of extended warranties offered by many electrical retailers.

Have a look here and there is a load of stuff on Money Saving Expert if I remember correctly.

LCD digital was it ?

Coz if it was, I hear they do that a lot, just like digital decoder boxes that cease to function after a year.

Could it be the standard quality electronics just isn't up to the power of digital?, perhaps fine for analogue signals or there never was any real problems before we were forced to go digital.

'The power of digital' - did you really type that? If al's tvactually made a noise when it went bang it was most like a capacitor that went pop in the power supply. Digital absolutely nothing to do with it as LCD screens have been around for years with analogue tuners.

Al - you should google the model and if it pops up like a rash, contact the shop you bought it from and the manufacturer. There are many models that have specific problems which are often fixed FOC. A product can has to be of merchantable quality - look it up. Most products have to last at least 6 yearts. I'll dig it up later when I'm home.

Why do capacitors go pop ?

Electrolytics with reversed current, ancient caps that need reforming or just crap components not up to the job or even power spikes the smoothing circuits aren't cleaning up properly ?

I am inclined to think crap components, stuff getting cheaper all the time to maximise profit. Honestly everyone I know who has had a digital LCD tv since we went digital has complained the thing didn't last longer than two years and definitely not as long as the old analogue tv's of better makes or comparable costs to the LCD digitals now.

My experiences with digital decoder boxes, they just failed, ceased to work, opening them up on failure as I often do looking for tell tales, dry joints burning, discolouration etc I find nothing so can only conclude the integrated circuits not the discretes and I sodding can't be bothered to fault find those things these days besides not having the equipment anymore.

Sign of the times perhaps, the throw away society ?

We are depleting our resources at a stupid rate all so the few can become rich whilst placating the majority with bright baubles.

Like everything nowadays its all built down to a price. The quality of components and metals and the like is nothing like it used to be. Most of us have a pair of pliers robbed from grandads shed that never fail to undo stuff and still have decent teeth unlike a modern pair that seem to get chewed up first time you use them.

There is a life with out TV

And so there is and I am enjoying it so far, but had another visit from the tv licence salesman this morning, same one, it just got grinned at asked the same question as last time, he answered the question then left, I can keep doing this no problems, the question is when is the sub contractor going to realise he is losing money coming here.

My email is playing up now!

I think they may be on to me.
