Old School Grand Master
Hello

I am building a bike with derralieur gears (bleugh). Running out of chainrings and chainsets, all I have left that is spare is a crank with a bashring.

Obviously, I know nothing about these as they are up-to-date, and the period of cycling I am knowledgeable about is about 30 years before I was born.

So, how do you build one of these up? Should it be the same size as your middle ring? Can you use it with two rings and a front mech? Would I wind people up if I called it a trouser guard?

Thanks for any advice/tips.

Had one once on my LTS, came with a set of FSA cranks, the bash ring took the place of the outer ring and was slightly bigger than the middle ring (32 tooth), as far as i know they are not designed to be used with a mech, dont see why it would'nt be possible to run a granny, middle ring and mech though providing it's set up properly, but i've never seen it done, common ones replace the outer ring but some trials ones replace the middle for use with a granny ring.

Hope this helps

chris, yor middle ring can be any size up to what the bash will fit, it might say on the ring itself (a max tooth size ring)
i have run two rings bash and mech often, just adjust the limit screws so the third shift is non existent (can shift up)
you mit wind some people up calling it a trouser guard but, they are very effective at this job! thats all i use mine for, means i can wear whatever i want on the bike which is soooo much easier!

let me know if you need any more help

edit, as jimihendrix said, the bash normally replaces the outer ring but i think it possible to get longer chainring bolts and run 3 ring AND bash
