A friend of mine is thinking of getting a new bike and has asked for my advice on what she should buy.

She rides mainly on road but has recently asked me to show her some of the easier off road routes in our area so I'm thinking a hybrid should be perfect.

Does anyone know of any good deals around at the moment or have any personal recommendations?

Certainly sounds like a hybrid would be the way forward. I'll be selling a Peugeot 700c wheeled hybrid in the next few days if that's of any interest? It's 54cm though, so don't know if that's too big... :)

I think that will be too big dj, thanks anyway.

I will find out her budget but Halfords looks a good bet.

I rode a Marin Sausalito many thousands of miles back in the 90s, but I would suggest a mountain bike with hybrid tyres as it will give the flexibility to do proper off road but will be 90% as good on road. :)

i would recommend a ridgeback nemesis again
my dad loves his (only on road though, hasnt taken it off road)
its very light and a good bit of bike for the money

but you could also buy and mtb and just utilise it that way

but boradmans are generally good
and the cannondale badboys look good too

make a shortlist, do pros and cons of each
then go with her to try some on for size and feel
