Hughs fish fight

I didn't actually see this particular prog, but have seen stuff before about fishing off the UK. WHy do fishermen catch so much when they know they have quotas to stick too?
Is it a case of literally, casting their net wide, to ensure a full quota?

Also, farmers don't destroy their land, or slaughter all the cattle in one go as they understand the need for longevity and fruitful business year after year. Why then do fish-ists sail out and try to catch every single living thing until there is no more left? Surely this is self-destructive.

My family had fishing boats for decades mate and you clearly do not understand what you are talking about, the small fishing companys and boats only want to maintain their livelihoods and nothing more.it is the big factory ships and get rich quick companys that suck everything out of the sea........
Fishing should be limited to three days a week and keep all you catch....with massive fines for people who break the law....period....

And as for the fisheries bloke who could not even tell you what fish species were,......that is pathetic

Oh, I certainly admit that. I've never been fishing in the sea even with a line. I can see your point though about smaller boats up against the "big boys."

Out of interest, who polices all this? If a boat lands more than its quota, who is there to check every crate coming ashore?

It used to be maff but now not sure..........

They can board your boat whenever and wherever they choose and the fines are horrific.....but there is a loophole whee you can throw your bycatch back in the sea right near the beach

This means the public can fish the by catch out of the sea with nets for free....if more fishermen did this and maybe rented the nets to the bystanders to pull the fish out of the sea.....they could make money from that....we would have done it back in the day

I think it's DEFRA (always sounds like some sinister organisation from a 007 film or a Gerry Anderson show to me) these days.
