Hughs fish fight

I understand that.....it is just their whole way of doing business it absolutley stinks....and they will never get any of my money :P

Thing is though, if a massive Tescos opens nearby and all the local shops start to close down, its because the population prefer to go to Tescos (insert any brand of supermarket.)
If they really cared about their local community, they would stick to the old shops and Tesco would suffer. (They don't of course, because they drop the price of a whole chicken to £4 and everybody can't resist it.)
It seems in the UK we really love our supermarkets. Maybe because, as reports say, we work longer hours than others in Europe we don't have the time for a more varied and relaxing "shop" at lunchtime or after work.

Where I live, there are lots of farm shops where I could buy dairy stuff direct and cut out the supermarkets. The irony is, being currently unemployed I have the time to drive about to these places, but not the cash. When I was employed, I had the cash but no time. In town we have a lovely shop that stocks meats and dairy stuff from all local sources, but it shuts at 5:30, its not open on a Sunday so its no good to me. OTOH we have a Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, M&S and a Netto due to change into Asda soon.

Well we buy our beef from our local herd at somerleyton, and our game as well......we buy our veg from ingham farm shop, and our dairy from our local holstein herd....

Chicken comes from m&s and our cheese from mrs temples of norfolk, and each weekend we make our own bread from flower bought from lessingham watermill 8) 8)

Beer from st peters brewery in suffolk, and wine from harry burgundy on here

All this stuff can be bought over the internet and by mail order,so you dont have to drive there 8)

Even our smoked fish and smokehouse products like bacon and smoked cheese come from orford smokehouse in suffolk....mail order again.....

and alot of what we buy is cheaper than our local supermarkets anyway...

Our sundries and stuff come from sainsburys.

Unfortunatley its a cost / convenience issue!!

I keep saying im not going to Asda anymore as I dislike the store and most of what they sell, but its 2 minutes from my house so if I need to pick something up at 10pm its convenient, and while im there I may as well get other things too. I then complain bitterly about the food etc, but unfortunatley the fact they are always open means they will keep my business even though I dont want them too.

Evolution in the market place, survival of the fittest.

We, mankind, have exploited the planet since we arrived. Small groups have lived in communion with nature never taking more than was needed but the population could not grow and that for all living things is the bottom line, reproduction. Thus we use resources and thankfully sometimes reuse resources or use them more efficiently but ultimately use them up.

Thus we fish often too much and Tesco's sells often too much but we all follow basic programming.

Thus to cure it all, either wipe out humanity, completely no exceptions or embark on extensive genetic manipulation program to reprogram the human genotype which could take more time than we've got.

Ultimately do what you as an individual feel you must to combat a wee bit of the problem. Hopefully you'll feel a wee bit better even if the long term world prognosis is bad.

I shop in supermarkets because foods affordable and online because its convenient. I try to remember to carry my own bags, recycle where possible and cycle as much as possible. I'll still eat Tuna because its lovely.

Blimey that was a bit deep for me................. :?

I didn't actually see this particular prog, but have seen stuff before about fishing off the UK. WHy do fishermen catch so much when they know they have quotas to stick too?
Is it a case of literally, casting their net wide, to ensure a full quota?

Also, farmers don't destroy their land, or slaughter all the cattle in one go as they understand the need for longevity and fruitful business year after year. Why then do fish-ists sail out and try to catch every single living thing until there is no more left? Surely this is self-destructive.

If you had seen the programs you would know what all the fuss is about, you're way off the mark with this.

I'm pretty sure if the Govt removed all quotas, those guys would just fish cod out of existance. No other "food producer" destroys their own source of income.
At the moment the imposed quota system causes incredible waste. Surely its better to limit the times they can fish but they get to keep everything they net. Which, I think, is what the Alaskans do with the King Crab.
