How retro do you have to be?

For me it is do whatever it takes
I love my '97 Mountaincycle Moho
It's a great retro frame that rides really well
But I brought it up to date with new bits
click on my link, tell me what you think,
I love it, others might not... But I do! That's what counts
(although it's nice that others like it too :) )

I don't care about about something being 'retro'. In fact if a company ever starts making good cheap rigid steel bikes again I'd love to buy a brand new bike rather than being forced to buy someones previously abused steed.

True to your username. Plenty of reasonably priced modern steel bikes about.

I must be looking in the wrong places then! Can you point me in the direction of a Steel MTB for <£500? How about less than £350?

I do actually have an interest in the bikes of the early 90's etc (from the era when I was a kid who dreamed of owning a Kona). But trust me If I could find the bike I wanted new and in budget in the shop today I wouldn't be buying second hand. That is all I meant!

Suppose it depends on your deifinition of 'reasonably priced'. I'd agree you'd struggle to get anything made from steel at £350, in the mass market alu dominates. However there are plenty of slightly more 'niche' manufacturers out there building in steel at what I'd consider a reasonable price, pipedream, on one, cotic, orange etc etc.

This is way off topic already. Guess if you want to continue the discussion then why not start a thread in off topic?

Just bought a On-One 456 to which I have reverse engineered to an extent. Modern frame, forks, brakes, wheels but old gears, chainset and shifters (friction thumbies)

For me a bike must be functional and reliable over period correct

It should 100% period correct   As the others have said have it as you like it's your bike and you have to ride it

Missed this before. Fair poinr. As this site proves nothing wrong with having an interest in retro bikes (and modern too). As for buying second hand I buy a lot (most?) stuff both modern and retro used.
