cope with .
I have an early 1960's Record one with long cable stop .
The rule of thumb is normally 10 as i understand it . Is this type less?

I think the cage is the same as the later models so it should take at least 10. I suppose it also depends on the chainset you're using it with. One that is the same age as the mech would probably have been 52/44 at most.

I've used a later one with a Dura-Ace chainset and 53/39.

I had the same version Campag front mech on my early 1960's Pat Hanlon which shifted fine on the Record 54/44t chainset....hope this to be of help

Thanks you gents . I am hoping to use 40 / 28 . If not i will change the inner ring to a 30 . It is a TA tourist C/S so plenty of options are availalbe .

I think the issue here is not so much the difference between rings but the small diameter of the inner ring.
The inner plate is not very deep so will be a long way above the ring which could lead to the chain unshipping as you change down.
Changing back up again might not be the best either. On the other hand maybe the small outer ring means the whole thing is just fine and dandy - I've confused myself now!

Try it and see,
Mark.

Sorted at 40/28, nice change . Tried a 44 outer found it to rough a change . Good low bale out gear to be had with a 28 .
