How do you start a build?

For me, always the frame first, as it's the frame that to a large extent dictates how the bike will handle and therefore whether it will be suitable for the type of riding that I want it for and also what components will be compatible.
Wheels could be considered at around the same time, as long as you know the type of application and whether you are going to use standard QR fixing or not. And the size, of course (26",29" 650B, whatever..).

I've never built up a bike just because I had enough stuff lying around to do so, the only time that I think about another totally new bike is if I fancy trying out something like, say, longer travel forks, different wheel sizes, a dedicated singlespeed, whatever, and I can't build that into what I have already without too much compromise.

For example, if we got months of weather liike we have at the minute then I'd think about a dedicated snow bike and find a frame (Surly Pugsley I suppose) to build one . Fortunately we don't ....

I always start with a frame. Generally don't buy parts unless I need them for a build or feel like changing something on another bike. I don't tend to keep frames/parts hanging around either. Unless it's something I really like or that's hard to find, I usually sell them on and then find out I need them about a month later.

i acquire a frame through random chance

then i spend about a week cursing all the perfect bits for it i sold a couple of months ago. then i rebuy those bits at more than i sold my old ones for. then i build it, then i dont like it as much as my kilauea, then i sell it

Generally just buy lots of shit I like.

Buy frames I like.

Think about stuff, mess about.

Then try and source what might be needed to finish build. Its organic. I dont start with a vision, it grows in my head.

Have some syncros forks..hence need an old RM for them...goes from there.. just keep eye out for bits that suit. But this is only one of several builds that take shape.
:D

I have two pairs of XTR v-brakes that i want to build a modern neo-retro rim braked bike from. So, "frame first" as a few chaps has said here... not for me :D

Start from anywhere. Last year I built a bike around a brake caliper. I'm just starting a build around a pair of cranks I picked up.

Haven't done many builds as yet but each time the frame has come first- I'm a bit lazy when it comes to bits - usually ededwards magically has most of what I need just "lurking" in his collection and I get the bill later!
