How do you choose your music?

Just a random thought based on a few old experiences.

When I used to buy CD's it was based on random recommendation...three examples:-

1. Having a few jars trendy pub in Clapham circa 98 I guess...card on the table with some reviews...read one and thought that sounds me.

Gus Gus Polyesterday....still got it...great.

2. 1990...where was I ...maybe Bournemouth, dark times, just about to get divorced for the first time. Read somewhere about a group that sounded alright I suppose.
Young lad in Virgin shakes his head in approval (oh shite I think, what have I bought)

Pixies,Bossanova :D still prefer it over Doolittle

3. Divorced 2000...and my sweet little angel girlie now 13 or something persuades me to buy her a CD mummy wouldn't let her have (ha...this will p@ss mummy). Home she hits the Walkman on headphones...later I listen.
Jeez....you're to young for this sweetheart!

The Mashall Mathers LP...love it

when i get music i go a bit crazy, normally searching charts and the like for a good reviewed track. it would normally start with me checking out a known artist to me (to see for future releases) the i go onto see who theyre collabing with then maybe look at who else is on the label, end up looking at loads of different wiki pages and the like, listen to lots, linked pages that go to another artist,
that sort of thing

I'm lucky enough to have a proper old record shop in a nearby town.
I've been going there , on and off, for nearly 40 years ( ), and it's still owned by the same family and, somehow, manages to support a fulltime staff of four.
I nip in every couple of weeks or so, and Danny , the manager, usually has a few recommendations of stuff I might like. It's easy to waste an hour or two in there, browsing, chatting and listening...
If I don't like something I buy, I can return it, no question.
Otherwise, it's stuff I hear on the radio, usually on Radio London's "World" music show.
I only ever use Amazon or Play as a last resort, and never , ever download stuff. Whether at home or in the shop, if a CD cover catches my eye, I'll have it out.

(Which pub in Clapham , Carl? My haunts were the Prince of Wales, on the Pavement, the Landor, or the Falcon, if I remember correctly :? )

dont listen/read reviews at all.if i hear something i like ill eventually get it.its the same with recomendations from friends, never really got johny cash but since my best man sorted me some on a mp3/memory stick i actually like it.

tbh i tend to buy old cd's and vinyl, stuff i had on tape as a youngun that now can be had on cd.alot of this modern tat is just that, tat.no creativity and just produced for a mass market to make a few million quid and move on to the next "big thing".

still,if public enemy released another album........................... :D

Randomly.. usually from either a 'hip' online buddys suggestion or some investigating after hearing a snippet on tv/interweb/radio..

Al's recent 'mind blank' thread stirred up some cool tunes 8)

i used to buy based on reviews and ended up with a really bad cd collection.

bought a lot of albums based on hearing a song in a club and occasionally radio.

got a good few from going to see bands and liking the support acks (embarassingly i got into idlewild as they were support for the lightening seeds who i'd actually gone to see!

nowardays i have found loads of new stuff on last.fm including frank turner and the gaslight anthem. both are now firmly in my top ten

there's a lot of good musicv on adverts and tv too. the advent of the internet is great as you can hear something and are able to discover what it is.

Whenever somebody recommends or says I should listen to band X or CD Y, I invariably hate it. I never bother with recommendations from people, any more - because really it's just an extension of the music they like.

Like others, snippets of things I hear on telly, or radio, or from bands I know I like.

most the music i like i heard on skate ,surf and bmx vids back in the 90s and now tbh lol

Still listening to rock/heavy metal, same as I was in the very early 70's

Went to school in Leyton with a certain bass player from Iron Maiden (not name dropping, but it explains things in a minute)

During art lessons a few of us didn't do any drawing etc and brought in albums to listen to on a cranky old turntable and valve amp.
Albums such as Machine Head, Argus and Very Eavy Very Umble, not very popular with most of the other teenagers though

Musical tastes were obviously formed early on and still listening to the same style of music today.
Such a lack of quality bands now and can't imagine anything new to rival music such as early Rainbow or the Dio fronted Sabbath
Don't mind Iron Maiden either, but think they peaked with Number Of The Beast

RIP Ronnie James Dio, was looking forward to seeing Heaven and Hell at Vicky Park this month.

I don't choose music; it chooses me. Seems strange to say but I haven't ended up pigeonholed into one genre, it's just hearing things around and about. My collection includes everything from folky country to death metal
