How do I get an 8 speed Campag wheel to work with Shimano ?

Campag 8 speed is nominal 5mm pitch - exactly the same as shimano 7 speed. So you could lose a sprocket, pack the empty space with washers/spacers and get some 7 spd shimano shifters and mech and it will work.
Getting it to work with shimano 8 is not easy. You could get a shift mate or an expensive custom cassette, but its not a known easy match.

I used to use 8 spd Shamals with 8 spd 7400 and ultegra sti's with no problems whatsoever.
In fact, shifting was improved for the ultegra sti's.

Remember that some of the early DA 8 speed stuff had an odd (unique) shift leverage. The error (0.2mm) per cog is the same as running 8 speed Shimano with the 7 speed thumbie hidden click workaround.
Set it up on a middle gear to equalise the errors either side and you will get it to work, but of course it's more tetchy to errors. Clean cables in the dry will probably be fine...dirty old cables in tired outers is asking for trouble.

Sheldon has the spacer thickness at 3.0mm and 3.1mm for shimano and campagnolo 8spds - maybe thats more to do with why it shifts ok.

The Pennine shifting was never an issue mixing the Campagnolo 8spd cassette and 600 8spd dt shifters.
