How do I find a compatible fork for a 1997 GT Zaskar

I have a 1997 GT Zaskar I got today ($350) that I want to change to a city bike. I just changed the tires to slicks, and I want to get rid of the Rock Shox fork and put in a non-suspension fork. It's 1 1/8 inch, that's all I know, how do I find a compatible fork? Since frames have different size fronts, the steerer tubes have to match each frame, right? Are there forks that have long steerer tubes that you decapitate to fit any bike, or were the different forks I have seen as OEM on the Zaskar made to fit the frame?

I can adjust derailleurs and brakes and have packed bearings into a hub, I think I can do anything on my bike as long as I save most of the beer until the end. Please don't tell me to go to LBS.

take a look at the salsa cromoto. about £60 and the right length for that frame. new forks come with a massive steerer that can be cut to length.

I'd suggest that you remove the suspension fork and measure the length of the steerer. Then you'll know how long the steerer on the replacement rigid fork needs to be.
You can either buy new and cut to the original dimensions or look for a second hand fork that has a long enough steerer.

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
