been running a pair of Z1 dropoffs - the lime green ones from 1998? and had them serviced for the first time last year and the shop said I could probably have left them as they were fine.

does anyone know if Z2s or Z3s with the machined brake arch (pre-00?) ever came with a a 1 1/4 inch steerer?

The steerers were replaceable, but on my Z3 a 1 1/8 was a fit without a reducer, so I suspect that the answer is no, unless you can get some trick custom steerer machined up.

probably because they're practically modern & not retro!
as mentioned several time what a relief when they came along tho,a fork that actually properly worked! rockshox should have put the mag21 internals inside a judy-like exterior, that would have been progression!

I posted all this on the thread about my Lloyd.

This bike started out it's life with the RC35's. I then fitted some 1998 Bombers which can have a 1" steerer.

The RC35's where very basic and felt it, when the steerer snapped I had had enough. The Bombers are sublime in comparison and they feel better than many modern forks I have tried.

For a retro rider they are the best choice IMHO. I've tried to build this as if I had owned it all it's life, upgrade when required etc. If I had tried forks like these in 1998 I would have been very happy.

I think my MY2000 Z2 Atom 80s are a bit new to be considered early (the wrong century!) but I'm so glad I bought Bombers. Not the lightest by any means but they work so well and just keep going. 8 years later, I'm getting around to giving them an oil change...

Completely agree Geoff, but to go back to the theme of the thread the funny thing is that Pace RC35s are worth twice as much on eBay as Z2s, and an RC36 Evo would fetch three times as much. I don't really understand why that is.

The red 98 Z2s that I've just put on my 98 Explosif elsewhere on here cost me £50 a while back, but I've just paid £42 for some silver/blue 97 Lights which I hope are going to complement the blue 96 decals on my other Explosif (fingers crossed) and earlier I paid £52 for some lime green 97 Lights, and that included a RaceFace Thermo headset and a pair of XTR V-brakes.

I reckon that's cheap for forks that work really well. An RC35 will generally fetch around £75 and an RC36 Evo around £125. Maybe the RC36 is a better fork, but not much and the 35 is worse. So I think Dyna-ti has a good point.
