Hello,

Just want to explain first so you dont think im just out to try and make a buck.

At the moment I am getting some bits together to build an Orange o2 and have mentioned it before this is the first time since the mid 90`s that I have been into moutain biking. Now when I used to race back then my Dad used to build me bikes for me as it was something he loved doing (he did ride aswell) but loved the bike building.

Now bless him the old chap was diagnosed in Jan with terminal cancer and already through treatment etc he is pretty housebound and weak but getting better again, Now last night he made a comment about the Orange ...His eyes lit up and he said he was looking forward to building it!!! Now this is the first time in months I have seen him actually positive about doing something...So I was wondering .... Do you think its possible to get your money back on building some bikes?? I am not trying to make money but if its something that gets him up and going and something to do/ aim for I will get another frame etc

What do you think? ( if your still awake?? ha.ha )

Cheers

Dave

I think it can be done without loosing too much, as long as you source your parts carefully. Most of the builds I've done, I've ended up paying over the odds for bits, and so lost money. Ebay can be great, as long as you restrain yourself!

Sounds like money isn't the primary concern here. If you can afford to loose a little bit, it sounds well worth it for the enjoyment it could provide.

Regards

Gareth

i agree the money in this case is not important.i would just enjoy the task and have the memories....to look back in 5 years time and smile thinking of the fun you had and damn the expense...worth its weight in gold.. :)

Just do it! This sounds like it is going to something positive for you both at an obviously sh*tty time.
And no matter what anyone says, it is possible to make a few quid (you're not going to get rich!) from bike building - look for stuff on Ebay or in your local classifieds that has been neglected or has damaged/missing parts. I reckon that making a few quid will also help prevent your dad from thinking that you are doing it to humour him - a real danger in the 'bad' times.
My thoughts are with you - I only wish I had such an opportunity before my father went....

.... completely agree. It i'll be 10 years in September since my dad passed away and although we weren't building bikes together, spending time together on a project is something I'll never regret as it's time you'll never get back. I helped him lecture design students and took over on the weeks the chemo got too much. Not only did I learn new skills but I got a better understanding of the respect people had for him.

In the last year I've restored my aluminium "O" to how it was when he brought it for me. It's something that reminds me of good times and happy days....so to me it's Priceless.

Keep positive.
