My son is 14 and, i'm not biased honest, a very intellegent young man.
He excells in all subjects, more so if he has some interest in what he's working towards.
So imagine my surprise when he informs me that his Geography homework is to build a paperamche/or similar scale model of a bloody volano!!!!!!!
I can understand this sort of thing in there younger years but he's about 2 years away from his GSCE's and all they can think to give him to assist in his education is model making

Should i be alarmed???

There is a lot of science/geology/geography/meteorology etc associated with volcanos, so building a replica is a great way of reinforcing key points. I remember building complex organic molecules out of coloured plastic balls and straws bitd and hanging them from my bedroom ceiling. Yes, it really is better sometimes than just reading a book.

A good point.
I maybe should have been more specific about exactly what he had to build.
No labeling of any specific areas or structures was required, to my amazement, just lash together a redimentary cardboard and crepe paper mock up of a volcano. Its as if the teacher forgot to set any homework and just asked for the first thng that popped into her head

He tries hard at everything he does and it would be nice if some of his teachers put in as much effort.

On the plus side, modelling is a blast! He can, of course, add all sorts of fancy elements such as a cross section with labelling. Bingo!

Or maybe people in the village at the base getting entombed forever in the spewing ash.

Well, I'd say that's pretty basic for a 14yr old. 7-8, OK, but I hope he's been taught some geological concepts to go with this.

Here's a quick how to build a volcano.

Then skim him through this to actually lean something about how they occur, form and work. A-level stuff, but worth the effort.

All the best,

Love that!

Are we talking coke bottle centred working model with village and rear cross sectional etc?

Maybe it was a bit of fun for the end of term.

I think your missing a trick here, search elephant toothpaste experiment on you tube, should be a giggle

If only they were after something anywhere near that complicated
