ok so i have 3 nickel P7's, one i've had quite a while, a 94/95, canti brakes and 737 xt, looks pretty much catalogue, i recently bought another nickel p7 frame, a 96/97, but then a friend decided to sell his mint 96/97 complete bike to me which is v brake and 9speed xt, so the frame i have is kind of not needed, but i decided i want to do a neo-retro build, so as the nickel is a bit dodgy i've decided to paint it.

being that i have 2 that are very original it gives me the opportunity to do something different, especially as i'll be using a pace rc30 (?) fork on the front so i looked through the Orange archive to see if there was a paint design i like that i could use as inspiration, but nothing jumps out.

so what paint do you think i should do? i was thinking something bright, maybe a 3 colour fade? i'm wondering about even a fat chance style paint job on it, thoughts? is that blasphemy?

also, i'm thinking about brake options, the fork has v brake and disc mount, the frame has just v mounts, i'm thiking i could get a disc mount added and go disc front and rear, and if i do i'd remove the V mounts, or i was thinking Magura rim brakes, and if i do that i'll get some specific cable guides for the hose.

thoughts? IMG_7171.webp

Nothing wrong with doing an homage to another bikes paint job imo.

I had a Raleigh Cajun bitd and loved the colour scheme, a white to turquoise to ark blue 3 way fade, looked great imo, and I had to replicate it when I sorted out some scuffs and scratches on it. I'm not pro, but got a decent result using rattle cans and some patience trying to blend the fade using the cans and some skill I didn't know I possessed.

Recently I've seen a couple of lovely retro bikes with awesome paint jobs. A Marin with some flouro yellow, pink, orange I think, and a Peugeot which was purple blue and white iirc.

I had a nice Raleigh 531 racing bike which I also thought had a great paint job. If memory serves, it was white, yellow and blue, maybe even had red involved. It was a long time ago now.

Paint colours these days aren't very inspiring, yea it's easy to hark back to the good old days and think it was better back then, but everything is very generic these days and all done to a price point with logos being the prominent thing, the paint job is no longer something that seems important to make a bike look cool.

I saw a Cannondale when I was on holiday once, had a similar paint job to the Cajun, I wanted that bike badly and hope I can find one one day.

I've always really liked the speckled paint on the Raleigh Amazon, these are the best images I could find but remember it being much brighter in real life:

Was a kind of yellow / green / blue splatter gradient over a very dark blue or green 👌

No idea how you'd attempt to replicate it at home 😂

ok so i'm on my painters website, for inspiration really, i have some orange Orange P7 stickers so i figure that the stickers have to show up against the paint, i'm making myself steer away from white! i love white bikes, they look so clean! but i've done that several times! i like the idea of a flip paint but i think the stickers will look crap on that so i'm now thinking single colour, saw this, candy mirage blue

with flouro oranbe stickers i think this could be nice
