HiFi, Speaker cable.

This is why I dont get into these discussions too often. I was trained by people with letters after their names and Phds who know far far more than any of us.

Bi amping works regardless of whether the signal is sent through a crossover before the speakers or within the speakers.

The Yamaha will do all the LFE processing regardless of what subwoofer is used. It acts as a crossover sending the correct frequencies to the speakers and to the sub. A case of reading the user manual to get this right.

Most subs have a mono input via the left channel, this will be clearly marked or indicated in the instruction manual.

But not old enough to add cabbages to that??

And does LGF look like his avatar?
I fear not yet, when reading his posts, that is the face I see talking. . .

I think my mains power is dirty too, the actors just don't sound 'sharp' while watching Hollyoaks.

My sub wasn't labelled mono, just phono in L&R, always wondered.
I have it dialled in to perfection via the myriad of settings on the AX1, it sweeps perfectly up through the main speakers.
Many hours of Smaart on the Laptop via an SPL meter and settings tweaked. That got the speakers sounding neutral as per the Smaart then just slight tweaks for the audible way they sounded.
The only annoying thing with the sub is the auto on signal on/standby thing, some big explositions just get slightly missed while it 'wakes up' if the overall volume is too low to keep it live.

It's probably a 'cold' sounding setup but most of my music is digital anyway and the AV setup sounds ace. That said the room is lived in, it isn't and my head isn't in the exact same position every time I listen.

I've never known an area with as much money, smoke, mirrors and snake oil as the audiophile world.

.

get an electrician to fit a dedicated ring mains - that usually clears up 'dirty' mains.

Cool, would I need a separate cunsumer unit too, for fear of crosstalk hum upstream?

I don't want to go too far sharpening up the actors dialect in Hollyoaks, I'd still like the actresses to sound dirty.

I dont often get in to hi-fi discussions on here.... however i did study sound engineering and multimedia integration at city and guilds and right through to HND level .. specialising in closed baffle speaker design.. basically calculating internal enclosure volume from the thiel and small perameters of each driver.. ( well a bit more to it than that but you get the idea)
my point being i do know what im talking about !! allthough it was a long time ago and i dont work in the industry for a living anymore so feel free to correct or update me on any points i may get wrong !!
I wanted to add a point about bi-amping... This depends upon what speakers you are using.. if the tweeters are cheap piezo jobbies then i would say dont bother... however if they are decent hi frequency drivers then yea is deffo worth it. The bonus being that decent hi frequency drivers can handle more power and thus be independently controlled seperate to the main driver. also it means that if one amp clips you dont effect both drivers, and it also gives you much more eq control on each seperate driver( bi wiring gives similar results with less control depending upon your amp). If you really want to test your setup ? get some software and do an rt60 test on them... basically firing pink noise through your speakers and measuring what you get out of them.. I did this with a db meter plugged in to my laptop and my laptop plugged in to my amp playing pink noise measuring 1 watt of power on the amp then placing the db meter 1 meter away from the speakers also setting a cut off point so you dont measure the reverberations from the walls in your house. This gives you a series of graphs.. from this you can change around your leads / wiring etc and really see the difference it makes 8) rather than just sitting there wondering subjectively if it sounds better or not :!:
Sorry to rant on but im bored and thought id add my 2 cents worth

Cool! I used to be a speaker technician for wharfedale and quad and technical guru at tag malaren audio - i've forgotten loads though
