Hi - Fi Question.

Re:

When I repaired the dust caps in the centre of an old pair of Goodmans Maxims I used a contact adhesive: http://www.diy.com/departments/evo-stik ... 226_BQ.prd

I upgraded the crossover components and the internal wiring as well:

Replacing electrolytics by film type is the first step.

Did you do a blind test of old vs new to see if you could hear a difference.

Btw you have a source 33uf 100v caps (film type)?

Re:

I didn't do a blind test, it would be difficult without 2 pairs of speakers. However, I think there was a subtle improvement, a slight increase in clarity, better imaging perhaps, but not an astounding night and day difference. The drivers in the Goodmans aren't fantastic and are probably a limiting factor.

You may struggle to find a film cap in that size, I couldn't find a 450uf cap needed for my crossover, someone made one up for me: http://rockgrotto.proboards.com/thread/ ... 2-upgrades

You can get electrolytics: https://www.jaycar.co.uk/33uf-100v-elec ... r/p/RY6914

Re:

Why do you want to change them?

If it's to improve the sound, better and especially high quality audio components that aren't produced in vast quantities do cost more money. Also, foil capacitors in those sorts of capacities are physically large, around 30mm x 60mm.

£10.00 to £12.00 isn't that expensive in the grand scheme of things, some of the really exotic stuff is eye wateringly expensive: http://www.hificollective.co.uk/catalog ... p-447.html

A bit cheaper: http://www.hificollective.co.uk/catalog ... s-cap.html
