Hi-fi advice needed...

Thanks for the post, Kestonian.

After reading your story, I can't imagine that you and I are the only two people to buy a CA amp with this problem. If we aren't, and several have been sent back to Richer Sounds with the same problem, then their explanation ("They're supposed to do that") now sounds even more wacky.

And as mentioned in my last post, I've just bought the Denon amp that I should have bought 6 or 7 years ago. This leaves me with a CA amp that's probably worth less (even when repaired) than the cost of performing that repair.

The advent of Ipod mania has allowed old hifi seperates to go at really low money on ebay sometimes, unless you're after something top end. 8)

As a totally philistine solution to your CA amp - try a squirt of contact cleaner inside the volume control and balance control "mechanisms" - has worked for me in the past to resolve irritating crackles.

Decent whisky on cotton buds dabbed onto CD player laser lens also can help skipping and poor reading of discs :D

Well, how's this for an unfortunate coincidence.....

I thought that the PMA-255 was great up until the second half of December; then I noticed that if I turn it on when the volume is low, the sound only comes out of..... the right hand speaker!  (Turning the volume up to the 9 or 10 o'clock position jolts the left hand channel into life and then I can turn it back down to the desired listening level.)

Oh, how I laughed at the irony -- the Cambridge Audio's problem must be contagious. Or more likely, I've just bought a crock. Again.

Unfortunately, this is a common problem as the volume control is often left in certain positions for a long period of time. This is where the most dust and tiny amounts of corrosion occur.

vigorously wiggle the volume control from side to side whilst turning it.

next stage is switch cleaner - however, this can sometimes damage the pot itself depending on type.

If still no joy, your amp is made up of a thousand parts each in turn manufactured separately, just like a bike. Alps do many volume pots for the hifi brands and any good technician can replace the volume pot for you.

Afteral, you would think a bike a crock if the gear cable snapped.

Does also sound like a dry joint, failing transistor, failing capacitor - not really easily diagnosed via email.

Thanks for the advice, LGF. I'll see if I can make any progress with it tonight. Thanks again.
