H'ew!
Quite a weird day, I was the oldest there! I'd also made an effort with my clothing, after all it was a job interview, and was completely over dressed as none of the others had bothered! One of them was there in ripped jeans and a t'shirt with a flimsy scarf.... not something I'd wear for an interview, even with it being in media.
Was an all day thing with several things going on, the first was to work with the group and sort an TV interview out from start to finish, each member taking on a different role. I took location manager as I've background with this from my photography work. On taking this role I managed to piss off one of the other people there (the guy in the ripped jeans), he was too slow, not my problem. It went on and I was given a list on possible venues and seeing that we'd be interviewing someone pretending to be Tinchy Strider opted for a something relaxed and urban... thus a nice pub setting with a slightly run down decor, perfect. I had to actually tell the others to 'STOP' as they were arguing over locations, the palantypist was struggling and I couldn't follow what was being said with my implant!
Some then put a row of office chairs together to mimic the sofa from the photo and I had to take matters into my own hands, I got rid of those, went to the other side of the room and brought over some sculptured seating that was the perfect shape of the sofa in the photo, I got brownie points for that.
Once that was all done and filmed, there was a group discussion about why we took on our roles. I said due to my photography background I have experience of working with locations and it was the best choice for me etc. One of the other guys who was operating the sound boom said he'd just worked on James Cameron's 'Avatar' score!!! He was barely 20 and my mouth just dropped open, as did my palantypist's! I mean 'huh'? I was thinking things like "I'm sorry but why are you here? You probably have more contacts than anyone in this room including the people we're being interviewed by, you've just worked on an Oscar and goodness knows what else nominated film, I mean why are you here?!". Granted he is an absolutely lovely guy, but still, this job is right at the bottom of the media ladder.... I just, well, was gob smacked really! So, felt rather intimidated by the amount of work my competitors had done already in the industry. Another one, the one I'd pissed off earlier, has worked on several films in South Africa (although it would be hard to confirm that one, if you catch my drift!).
During the discussion everyone started talking over everyone else and it became too hard for me to follow, every time I tried to join the conversation/debate the subject had moved on as my palantypist was about 10 seconds behind what was being said. It got to the point where the head of department actually told everyone to speak in turns as I couldn't follow, she could see me withdrawing.
that was then done and dusted, second part of interview was the development of a show from start to finish promoting a new band, fly on the wall stuff. We had to list all of the things involved with doing a 6 programme series etc. I was 'ok' with that but lack experience.
This test was on grammer correction and I flew through that one, phew!!
The interview at the end of the day however went really well for me, I explained what C4 can do, what I thought of C4's music programmes, how they can be improved, what I expect to achieve etc, my background with music and so on. I have a feeling I impressed them.... so, well not getting hopes up at all as I know I'm the underdog there, and of course I'm deaf!
Some of the others, including the Cameron guy where really cool ...oh I dunno, they have plenty of experience already so I wasn't sure why they were there trying to get in at the bottom of the ladder. I am very happy that out of over 1,000 applications I made the 10 that got to the interview stage, that in itself is mind blowing!
They'll get back to everyone next week, so we'll see what happens. Not getting my hopes up though.
