Help with CHEAP Single speed setup

Never tried building a Singlespeed before and basically run out of money half way through. I've got a half decent Specialized/Mavic rear wheel knocking about with standard sized hub/axle etc and seen this kind of thing to buy at a few places.

Just wondered if anyone else had used this kind of setup instead of the more expensive option.

Also can i just use a 7s chain & normal crankset with the Granny and outer rings removed. It'd look a bit naff but would have do until i can get more cash..

Just get an old short cage road mech. And to be honest running an old school road mech looks way cooler than some of these taiwanese tat affairs! Oh they work well too

Cheers,Al

Ahh but which is best, the 'On-One doofer' that pushes down or the 'On-One other Doofer' that pushes up ? :?

What about the front, i've seen a 38t Downhill chainring for sale on Ebay, looks like it might go cheap ?

I've got the one that pushes down, like an ordinary rear mech would. I guess the other one would be better if you run a really small rear cog (like 11t) as it would keep more teeth engaged by the chain. But most use a 16t or 18t so pushing down should be fine :?

At any rate mine works perfectly, no issues to report despite having the spacing of the rear cog too inboard so my chainline is all wrong! :)

Has anyone tried using a front chain retention thing made for DH rigs.
I've seen some that have an adjustable wheel which pushes the chain up round the back of the ring.
Like this DMR one....

Always thought this would look neater than the normal single speed tensioners.

Try a 'ghost' chainring idea.
Line up granny ring with a single rear cog using spacers with ratio such as 22/11 this puts chainline inwards towards wheel.
Connect up the chain hopefully with little slack.
Then place a chainring (Ghost ring) such as another 22 tooth or smaller or largers dependendent on what you have between the drive ring and sprocket between the chainstay and the wheel.
Move the ghost ring backward toward the sprocket one tooth at a time until the chain is taught. The chain tension will hold the ring in place and it will rotate with the other two rings.
Brilliantly simple !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will only work if the ghost ring does not interfere with the chainstay hence the inboard ring use.

Cheers
