Help with BB type

If it's 45 outside, it's probably a 40mm bore, and therefore Thompson. Get it checked out before committing to any purchases though.

You should be able to get a Thompson style bottom bracket and cottered chainset pretty cheaply.

It's far from high end but shouldn't be either difficult or expensive to get working. You might need to brush up on your German though...

Re:

Thanks ken.

I'll have a look. My German could certainly do with some work. Doesn't seem too costly to get sorted.

Still weighing up options, sell the frame or suck it up and commit to a bottom bracket.

Thanks again

Re:

I have quite a few spares to put on any frame really. The rest of the bike is set up to take them but bottom bracket posing to be the problem.

Thanks again. If the bike shop don't give any reasonable clues I'll probs ditch it and look for a compatible frame.

Re:

It's a Thompson. Hard to water seal properly and not always well made, but they can work ok (theoretically, having the cones on the outside, like a hub, supports the load better). Used on a lot of cheap 1990s Raleighs, too.

Re:

Thanks very much for confirming this. I dropped into the bike shop today and they sold me a bb conversion inner which I am hoping to get machined down to size then I can use any bb with this old frame.

If it's too much hassle I'll be selling it and live to fight another day
