Hey guys

I bought this frame and have no idea what bottom bracket will work.

The frame is a heidemann werke einbeck, not sure of the year but vin number is 897232.

Please help as I'm itching to get it on the road asap.

Cheers

I was at first thinking Ashtabula/one piece cranks and spindle, but the hole for the spindle looks way too small.

The cups are clearly pressed in which suggests an un-threaded bottom bracket shell. Beyond that though, I'm stuck.

Can you measure the width of the shell?

Re:

The width of the outer is approx 85mm, the inner is 50mm.

The diameter of the outer is 35mm and the inner is approx 22mm

I've never seen this type of set up before but the guy in the bike shop simply said "adjustable cone and cup" but I'm still no closer to buying. Ideally I'm hoping to buy a newer version if possible, maybe like a hollowtech etc but on first impressions i dont think thats an option.

Hope this makes sense.

Re:

Just an update. After a little more research I have discovered the inner were cups to house an all in one system.

I've managed to knock these out to leave a complete and even hollow measuring 70mm in width and 40mm in diameter.

Hopefully someone can shed any more light on which bottom bracket would fit and if I need an adapter?

Cheers

If your measurements are correct, it sounds like it was a "Thompson" type bottom bracket originally.

However, I'm hoping your measurements are slightly out... if so you may have easy options allowing a good choice of chainsets.

I'll assume the 70mm shell width to be correct but I'm hoping the 40mm is the diameter measured externally rather than the bore?

If so, you can definitely do square taper with a velo orange grand cru threadless bottom bracket and you may even be able to do Hollowtech...

You'll need to measure it internally with vernier calipers though.

If it is a Thompson type, your options may be fairly limited

Re:

Hey

Thanks very much. Yeah the diameter will be an approximate as I didn't have any calipers to hand. Although external diameter I think was approx 45mm

I'm certainly hoping I have more choice. I have read you can buy the adaptors/conversion kits too but cant find any with the correct dimensions to fit my bottom bracket....

Think a trip to a bike shop is in order....

Re:

Hi James

From the little I can see this has the appearance of a low end frame.
Its your money, but my personal opinion is that a complete bike like this would possibly fetch £50, and you are on your way to paying possibly £500 for it.

Someone has sold the components of the £50 bike, probably getting £300, and you are doing the opposite.

If there is no personal reason for doing this particular bike then far better to buy a complete genuine lightweight with known parts, and rebuild it with fresh lubricants and cables.

But its your money.

Re:

Hey Keith,

Thanks for your comments. I'm starting to realise this is the case.

Ideally I am just trying to build myself up a cheap city bike with 2nd hand parts sourced from the net and also gain some experience in the art of building bikes, prior to spending large amounts of cash in the future.

This build is certainly more practice. I'll leave the full restorations for later.

So far the only obstacle is the bottom bracket. If it's too expensive to convert I will probably sell the frame and start fresh.
