Help setting up gears !!!

Hi all, I need some help

I have replaced the Sora Shifters (3x9) on my Roberts. Until funds allow me to buy some Dura-ace 9 speed indexed I am using Shimano 105 Downtube levers in friction mode.

I can get all the gears apart from the smallest at the rear , the 11 tooth. I have replaced the gear cables, cleaned and lubricated the rear mech (Ultegra 6500), adjusting the H screw it seems to stop moving the deraillieur and then the screw goes loose. Adjusting the barrel adjuster fully it tries to go in the lowest gear but does not quite catch.

The bike has been in storage for a while, riding it last with the Sora shifters it did go into the lowest gear but would not stay in it.

Am I missing something ?

take the cable off, set limit to run on outside cog with no noise.
reinstall cable.
move through gears to inner cog. set limit screw.
from the picture, your chain is too long and needs a line removing.

if the above doesn't work, check your hanger isn't bent.
then check your wheel is centred.

Gear adjustment was the thing that took me the longest to get the hang of so far, I strongly recommend the playlist below, I had to watch them a couple of times before the penny dropped, but now i'm finding it easy to get smooth quiet gear changes front and rear.

Thanks, after my cuppa ( I was getting a little wound up so had a break) ill give that a try.

You are using my favourite tool for tricky problems, a cup of tea. The time to take a break and shake off any frustration often helps no end.
Hope it all gets worked out.

It worked, took the cable out adjusted the limit screw and put the cable on and now its all good. Thanks for the info chaps
