Help! Real poblems removing adjustable cup

I'm having massive problems trying to get the bottom bracket out of a new frame I've bought. The frame is a reynolds 531 Holdsworth.

I've managed to get the fixed cup out, and the lockring but I'm stuck with a stuck adjustable cup.

So far I've tried two pin hamers and bent both of those. Now I've got the fixed cup out I've also tried the sheldon brown trick of threading a bolt and washers through the cup but with no success!! I'm using a cheater bar and getting all my strength behind it but it isn't working.

The cup is scrap, just need anyway to get it out.

I've not got any power tools though.

Can any one help?

Is anyone local to Northwich and fancy giving me a hand?

If you are repainting the frame, a bit of heat from a blowtorch might loosen things up.

Otherwise a good pickling in Plus-Gas for a week wouldn't hurt.

Can you bash em out with a hammer?

I've just been the local diy shop again and bough another bolt and washers for the sheldon brown trick but still no good.

No, you can't bash it out :shock:

If the cup is fully bolted onto the driver, then you can try a metre of scaffolding pole to increase leverage.

Hi,

I've got a big cheater bar attached to the bolt but it doesn't work.

Maybe somthing is wrong with the set-up.

This is the set-up:

Bolt (inserted from the inside of the cup), washer,washer,cup,washer,washer,nut.

This is what happens:
Wrench the bolt using extra pipe to get good leveredge, the bolt spins around.

Or, as above but clamp the nut with a spanner. The bolt doesn't move but the wrench still goes around. (Not sure where the turning force disperses to if the bolt or cup doesn't move.

Maybe the wrench is slipping but it doesnt seem like it.

Just need to bodge it out somehow.

Just one stupid question.

You are undoing the RHS BB cup clockwise aren't you? It's a left hand thread.

Hi,

No it's the adjustable cup so left hand side of bike (non drive side). Turning it anti clockwise.

The other side (fixed up) was clockwise.

You might be twisting the stem of the bolt itself (just before it snaps) but I think that's unlikely on a normal size bolt.

Hmmm. Tea and PlusGas for a week :?

Perhaps you could try turning the bolt with a long socket from the other side. In this direction you would be tightening the bolt.

I had the same once, but with me the cup sat in right position and was in great shape, so I gave up and put everything back with Motorex grease and new loose balls. I understand this is a past station for you.

If you tried everything, this could be the final option: take a saw and make 1 or -if necessary- 2 cuts. Make the 1st where the least threads sit, what will at the height of the stays. Possible you will cut into the threads, but I doubt whether it will hurt function.
